The Philips players gets some very good and bad comments about it.

Is it worth picking one up for around £200 new. Is Region 2 only, but that's easily changed. With the reliability issues is it worth the risk. Are the later batches likely to be problem free.

I currently have a Sony 930, but feel the progressive part (Sony's own designed chip) isn't as good as some of the chips around. I was thinking about a Pioneer 757 but that's double the price.

I need PAL progressive, SACD compatability and SVCD compatibility if recommending any other players.

    Thanks for looking...

hmm..., I wonder why you're not satisfied with Sony? have you had a chance to make some comparisons? I've come across at least three different reviews rating 930's progscan PQ very high. one of the best for the price tag. one of them compared it with 963 and gave a bit better marks to Sony. I dunno how much internals does 963 share with 763, but I tested 763 with my self burnt DVDs and it couldn't read them at all while Sonys (930 and 730) play them well even though they get quite low marks for drive quality. just a remark, dunno if of any importance to you.

if you can hold your horses for a moment wait for new Yamaha DVD-S1500. it's got Faroudja (if you need a better name than Sony), DVD-Audio and SACD. May be a tad more expensive than 200 quid though.

I still use mine and still say you won't get a better picture under £1000 IF you get a good one.

For £200 its worth a shot for sure.

    ...as has Philips DVD-963SA.
I prefer Philips with SA-CDs compared to my previous Sony SA-CD player.
I agree with Puddleduck, for £200 it's definitely worth a try.

See the new Philips DVP720SA for less that 200Euros in www.bestekeus.nl

It plays DVD-Video, SACD, SVCD, JPEG, MPEG-4, DivX, -/+R/RW.
It has PALprogressive scan and component output, built in Dolby Digital, DTS and Dolby PrologicII decoders, 12bit/108MHz video DAC, and looks fantastic!

I do like the look of that - similar style to the DVD recorders... may have to do some more research
