Is it right that you can play GTA 1&2 online with a mod for the pc games?

I read somewhere (can't seem to find it now) that people are playing grand theft auto 1 and 2 online, is it true, and if so how can you do it? I don't have either game for my pc but for sure I'll go buy 'em if they can be played online
And if it does work, what sort of games are playable? I mean how many online players etc.?
Cheers for any replies on this

This is a mod for GTA3, VC has one too, but you will have to dig for that one.

GTA1 and GTA2 were both multiplayer enabled anyway (this is the old skool GTA games with the overhead views).

I installed Multi Theft Auto and had a play.

Its basically the maps with no missions or other vehicles. Anybody joing the hosted game is just an extra vehicle.

It degenerated into a knock the other guy(s) off the road and getting thier car to blow up. I can't remember if you could exit the vehicle and then hijack thiers.

After a while it got a bit boring as there was no poinsts system or objectives so I stopped playing it
