...to connect a surround sound system to an LCD screen or does it have to be connected to the DVD player? At the mo dvd player runs thro my video without any probs and have a stereo connected to that to give me the sound.

but just wondered if it could be done as my dvd player is a cheapo and doesnt have the connections for sound.

cheers

Most sets I've seen have an analogue audio-out which you could plug into a surround sound kit. That would only give you Pro Logic (or Pro Logic II), which is a bit rubbish in my opinion. You'd be better off running digital connections from DVD player and Sky+ (if you've got it) to a receiver to get Dolby Digital/DTS etc.

What player have you got that doesn't have a optical or coaxial out? You can get cheapo players for £30 that have got a digital audio-out, so I'd be inclined to get one of those. Don't settle for dodgy analogue surround, especially when 5.1 digital is so cheap nowadays!

Oh rite...just lookin round at the mo. Well...what recommendations would you give? This would be for dvd player and surround sound system for between 100-150 notes?

to have proper surround sound IE dd5.1 you must have a digital receiver, if the set has dvb you are part way there, but this alone is not enough, the set will also require a spdif connection and the new sets have these slowly starting to appear.

well if you run it through a vidoe or have sky just use the rca outputs, this will at least give dolby pro logic

That would probably do for me...its just upgrading stuff for when i decorate. A 5 speaker system + sub would be adequate.

You should read the rest of the posts, you seem to have taken the thread full-circle!

Matt.H, £150 is cutting it a bit fine to get a 5.1 separates kit. If you only want 5.1 digital surround from your DVDs, and are ok with analogue surround from Sky/Freeview, something like this should give you the best bang-for-buck:

The Panasonic at the £150 mark should have analogue inputs to allow connection of your LCD/Sky etc, but don't quote me on that!

Thats the sort of thing i have been looking at...its probably 'old' now in comparison but i am not up with all the new technology that is available. So thought that people who are can recommend me some half decent stuff.
