    OK, what's going on?

I went into Sevenoaks (Guildford) today and asked a salesman if they had the Viera 37". He said no they don't stock it because all the other makes have better PQ (he listed about six models that he said gave better PQ, including Fujitsu, Hitachi, etc.) He said the same about the Viera 42".

He later also said they don't stock the Philips 32 PF9986 LCD for the same reasons... (he said the best LCD was the Panasonic 32", which I heard wasn't so great)

Where is this guy coming from? Surely all the screens I asked about are universally acknowledged to be among the best for picture quality ... and yet he says they're rubbish .

Was he trying to sell me those models because he didn't have the others in stock? Anyone have any good or bad experiences with Sevenoaks in the past?

Snap..........I went in the same branch last week to see if they stocked NEC plasmas and got talking to him (assume it's the same guy) and he said that the Panasonic Plasmas were disappointing PQ but that the Panasonic LCD's were very good.

He seemed keen to show me a Hitachi which he said was their best plasma.

Thanks sounds like it's not just me anyways...

Now I'm wondering what the guy's going to say next time they've got the Panny's in stock :)

Different topic, I guess but: Is the consensus in this forum that we participants are generally NOT affiliated with different brands / dealers? (Is there a thread dealing with this?)

Right, in general yes. Stuart, the 'owner' of the site has a 'disclosure' rule. Your status is 'new member', mine is 'retailer' Meaning the obvious. The ones with 'manufacturer' should be equally obvious. Whilst I and others like me do have businesses to run, I know of no members who work for '1 brand shops' and I thin k all the significant posters are employees of specialist independents rather than large franchises. Certainly, speaking for myself, I will post as I find and believe, there is no incentive here for knowing false statements, you would get caught with your pants down in no time, there is always someone who knows more than you in any 1 area!

Seems like Sevenoaks are the new richersounds!!!

I went into the Nottingham store, and wanted to discuss Panny 6 and 7 series
kit, and was politely told that it wasnt worth buying non-HD compliant screens
as you'll just ahve to throw it away in 2008 and pointed me towards a nice big
Pioneer instead at something like £3.5k...yeah right...

..I politely made my excuses and left

At least RicherSounds might not know their kit but theyre enthusiastic about the
stuff, at least they are not deliberately duff or misleading with the info...

Not necessarily. Dale Adams is a member, he works for DVDO, and is always helpful, and does not plug his product in any unbecoming way. Some makers come here to help, really I thought I had a monopoly on cynicism round here! I meant that as you can see who everyone is, as long as they are being honest about their status of course, you can tell how seriously to take their advice. Most retailers make the same kind of money from any plasma for instance, so a specific recommendation is likely to be because they think it's best for your requirements, though it's best to enquire what else they have in stock, just to check!

Sorry mate I was yanking the proverbial chain. Believe it or not, I was instructed to post on these forums periodically and to ensure nothing overtly slanderous was posted about us. Being something of a slacker I have been using the place for online technical support ever since.........
I am constantly amazed at the quality of information other members have lurking in their heads- and equally amazed at the limitless idiocy that others can throw up in response.

Chain yank accepted! I missed your tag in fact, as must be obvious. And your interest in the subject equally obvious as you are not lurking in the speaker forum to plug your product.

Hmmmmm sounds like good advice to me!!! What's the point in spending serious money on a bag of crap Panachronic screen that doesn't do HD, if you want one that is going to last?! What's duff or misleading telling you that? It's straight talking by the sounds of it. And 2008 is a bit over the top, considering Sky are launching HD in less than 5 months.

but normal sky will run for years and years getting ever cheaper, and SD dvds will become like VHSs, except they will still be good quality like they are now.

Sky may well be launching HD in some months time but until the other broadcaster get on stream this will only be a limited offering, and poeple like the BBC have no plans to broadcast HD until after 2010.

Mark, this post is so flawed, that either you have little knowledge of the current market (and pricing), or you are trolling.

Trolling, I don't think so. Just a bit naive. New boy digs up old thread, all posted some time ago when HD was feeling a bit less imediate than it is now, and prices have changed hugely since then too. No doubt searching for info on Sevenoaks, or else perhaps he's just got a job with them?

Benefit of the doubt I think, he hasn't clicked on how things work, ways of making a point without winding folks up. (except LG owners) He's not looking at the dates on these things.

I personally would never spend another penny with 7oaks (t/wells branch). Four years ago I spent 3.5K on a new sound system and got very good service from them, anything that was said by the guys I was dealing that wasn't factual was quickly pointed out as being just his opinion.

A few months back when the PV500 first appeared on the streets I went in asking if they would have the 500 set-up alongside the pe50 so I could do a comparison of both. This time I spoke to the manager he was very condescending, spoke down at me and said the following things:-

    1. No true Hi-Fi / Display specialist would ever have these two products side by side as the PV500 was for 'specialist' shops like his own and the pe50 was for sheds such as Curry's / Dixons.

When I pointed out that AV-Sales were just a mile along the road and that they would have these two sets on display and that they were just waiting for stock of the 500, I also told him that I had already seen the 500 in Curry's but that it was just set up badly. So if Curry's have the 500 how could it just be for the specialists? He said:-

    2. AV-Sales are not a specialist retailer, they are simply a web based box shifter and that when not if I experienced a problem with them I would regret buying from them due to their appalling service.

I then told him that I had a friend who worked for AV-Sales and that they may not be a specialist Hi-Fi retailer but were certainly specialists in the HC market and that included Plasmas. I then mentioned this site and the numerous people on here who had stated that they had received outstanding service from AV-Sales when they had a problem and that they were very willing to recommend AV-Sales to anyone. He said:-

    3. He was getting very, very frustrated with the increasing numbers of people coming into his shop who had spent a couple of hours or days reading up this site and then going into his shop thinking that they were an expert in whatever it was they were looking to buy. Sites like this should be shut down because they only serve to perpetuate lies and falsehoods about the Hi-Fi / HC market and industry. I should take it from him as he is expert, everything posted on this site should be taken with a very large grain of salt.

I suggested to him he might be frustrated by the fact that the internet and sites like this made it possible for people to do a bit of research before parting with large amounts of cash on the 'advice' of salesmen like himself. Due to this he was finding it more difficult to pull the wool over people eyes and therefore sell them the things 7oaks stocked as opposed to dealing with them in honest and open manner. I then duly left never to return.

I did think about posting to ask for other people experiences at the time but just never got around to it.

Sorry to hear that, guys with that kind of attitude give us all a bad name. I guess he thinks the CI guys like me, Joe, Liam, and HC retailers like Alastair all know jack about it all. I beg to differ.

Have popped into Sevenoaks in ahem Sevenoaks (one of the few places I've come accross with Euro 1080 plumbed into a Pio 435) and Bromley and they were helpful enough and reasonably knowledgeable...

That's always my experience as well...Watford was actually showing the PDP's with a hidef feed from Euro 1080...

And besides, I agree with them on the panny's ;-) I prefer the Pio and Hitachi's once I saw them properly setup...But I guess you don't win any friends here saying anything against Panny....

But then again I am probably just as silly to believe and agree that it is a waste of money to buy a non-HDTV ready model today....

    Hello All,

I am very interested in your view and comments on 7oaks. I am about to spent around 8K on Home cinema equipment. I have been researching equipment for around two years and have now saved up enough hard earned cash to by what I want. From reading many articles in the press and on the net I am led to believe that an AV specialist would provide me with an “all round” approach to price / service / advice and professionalism.

I have thus been dealing with my local 7oaks store in Cambridge and the experience has been somewhat varied. The first time I when to the store the sale person there at the time gave me and overview of what he thought would suite my needs. As this is a significant purchase I decided to research his suggestions and came up with a very different conclusions. No to say that he was wrong just our perceptions may have be different. I have returned to the shop on two occasions and spoken to a “new” salesman who gave me advice that was more in-line with my thoughts. However he did “steer” me in a specific direction fwith regards to my speaker selection. My main concern is that are 7oaks an all round decent AV specialist? Or should I widen the scope in search for a supplier? I also believe the cheapest supplier is not necessarily the best. So I’m willing to pay (within reason) for professionalism and service. Below is my AV purchase List, comments are welcome.
