is hdmi better sound than optical?????????

depends what formats you're needing to carry. I don't believe toslinks carry the new HD audio formats. True HD DTS HD but i'm sure i'll be corrected if wrong.

Also if anyone does know the answer to this, what about the PS3? Using HDMI for sound but could use optical if anyone could confirm which is best. Not looking to hijack, just the 2 questions are probably too similar to merit another thread......

I believe the bandwidth that HDMI can carry is several orders of magnitude higher than optical and further to this there isn't a digital to optical and back again converter at both ends of the cable.

I am pretty sure this is an open and shut debate.

The one that is really in question is whether HDMI is superior to ilink, but since you didn't ask that, I wouldn't worry about it.

hi there, should you run a optical lead when running hdmi or is the sound quality the same? any help much appreciated.:smashin: im running a pioneer dv600 dvd player.

if its just standard igital audio then both should sound the same, if its hd audio the hdmi is the only one that can carry the full hd audio soundtrack.

it depends on yor amp, if your amp can handle 5.1 pcm over hdmi then hdmi is the way to go as it can handle the hd audio from the ps3. If your amp cant the it doesnt matter which you use as both sound the same as long as you amp can take audio over hdmi as some amps only pass video over hdmi and dont pass the audio.
