Is 512k Enough For Gaming?

A friend of mine has just had his BT line installed with a view to take his PS3 online. However, when I do a check on his number it say's a max of 512k. This seems poor in this day and age.
Would this be enough for online gaming?
How long do you have to cancel the BT line?
He has only had this installed for the PS3 no other reason, so if thats no good there's no point in having the line there

Thanks

Should be alright, but he should expect lag sometimes, if not a lot. Also the upload speed would be crap (which is also key for online playing). My upload is 110 or so on 20meg virgin cable, so his must be crap.

He should have gone with BE/carphone warehouse/O2.

In broadband terms the amount of bandwidth used by most online games is almost nothing, little more than 5-8 KB/s even if you add VOIP you'll still not have a problem with a 512Kb/s which can easily support 50-60 KB/s. However, if you use it while the connection's also being used for downloads, look out!

I used to run 3 PC's on Unreal Tournament 2003 through the same 512Kb/s connection without any noticeable problems I got similar ping times to the other players.

Do a speed test on a separate site to find out the true speed. I use UK Online and have one meg. On GT Prologue I receive ghosting issues with online gameplay. Try enable basic options on your online game play. Good luck. I am ok just with mine at a meg. Can't go any higher due to copper cables. No fibre optics yet to my exchange.
