I went into a shop today a saw they had an exdemo FMJ DV27 DVD player up for grabs at £1050.
I was just about to melt the credit card when they hooked it up to a plasma and got no video signal. They are going to send it away for repair and give me a call when they get it back.

So is this as good a price as I think it is?
They are only going to offer a 1 year warranty as its exdemo - is this correct or should I be getting the full 2 year warranty from Arcam?
How much of an improvement is this going to be over my Toshiba SD-900 (yes I know the DV27 is PAL progressive)?
How much will it cost to upgrade to a DV27a?

So is this a good deal or should I walk away from it and save myself a few quid?

    Thanks in advance,
    Mark.

Thanks guys! Not such a good deal then?

So how much should I be willing to pay for the exdemo DV27?
And how much is a brand new DV27a?
Any other good deals for a DV27 etc anywhere? Second hand or exdemo is fine.

Any other DVD players I should be looking at for around £1000? The Arcams do seem to have about the best picture and sound for CD replay.

    I would buy a DV89 for £599 and then a used CD player, maybe a Meridian 506.20 player or a 602 transport.
There are so many second hand bargins out there on the cd side for around £500.
I know someone who has bought the G98 dvd player and says it is not a patch on the 602 transport he has had for the last 7 years on stereo CD playback.

This is the route I am going.

    Really?

I'd heard the G98 was one of the best transports "someone " had used.

I know that is what I thought!!

But someone who has dsp6000's all round in a 7.1 set up and can afford to buy things to try out, like a G98, I tend to believe as he is evaluating it from a non financial point of view, where as if a had just spent a few grand on a G98 I would probably convince myself it was the best transport I had ever heard :)

It probably depends what's more important, DVD or CD playback. The DV79 got a really strong recommendation (for DVD) in AVTech, the claim being that the PQ is arguably better than the DV27 (the review is available at Arcam's site http://www.arcam.co.uk/downloads/avtechdv79.pdf). It also has a digital video output if that's important to you. You could get one of these new for the same kind of money that the DV27 would cost.

I'd certainly agree that CD playback is likely to be better on a dedicated CD player, £ for £.

I have a DV88+, PQ is lovely from that with excellent audio for film watching. CD playback is not even close to my similarly priced CD player, though. The current prices that these and DV89s are selling for is an absolute bargain, I can't think of anything for the price that would match them on both points.

Thanks for all the replies guys :smashin:

    Pavel,
I'll have to take a look at the review on the Arcam site, thanks for that. I did look at the DV79 and this was what I thought I would get before seeing the exdemo DV27 for about the same money.
Only having a series 5 panny plasma I don't have digital inputs, so HDMI etc is of no use to me. Although saying that I have been recommended to get a video scaler with SDI and then upgrade the DVD player to one with an SDI mod at a later date when funds are available  . Now I really don't know what to do! Why can't this AV lark be simple?
