Thanks for the review Cas, yep deffo pick up this one..been watching downey jr since weird science in the eighties...through to his real life meltdown and court appearances in his orange jump suit, talking about liking the taste of the gunmetal when he put a gun in his mouth....people like that are always exciting edgy actors who are extremely watchable...i'm glad this is an improvement over the German release , and you are right the iron man is the linchpin of the MCU...without a shadow of doubt..and probably one of the best origin stories (along with Cap) IMHO

Looks like there is some mild DNR pass on the IMs similar to Captain America.

I assume it is missing the bonus disc that came with the original Blu-Ray release?

Unlike the Cap trilogy, this and the upcoming Thor trilogy are not day 1 buys for me. The first Iron Man film is great and I actually quite like the 2nd one. It's "Trevor" that kills it for me. They had one of the best villains up there with the likes of Thanos, Killmonger and Loki and turned him into a 'merkin wet-dream called Trevor.

Looking forward to this, I am a 3D fan but will pick this trilogy set soon as, given [email protected] were never converted to 3D. The other 4k marvels will pick on deals down the line, and have the option hopefully of mixing the Atmos with the 3D releases.

One thing that occurred to me (sadly) on watching a lot of Marvel originals before Endgame, is that the ‘edginess’ and ‘playboy’ which was so defining for the Stark character based on the original comics, brought amazingly to life by Downey Jr, may have been neutered if it had been made in the last couple years.

I refer mainly to what to me are ‘classic’ lines defining the Tony and Pepper characters and their relationship in these movies,

“Sometimes I even takeout the trash” , “sorry I’m late I was doing a Vanity Fair piece”, “she did quite a spread on Tony last year”, “yes, the article she wrote about me was pretty good too”, and there was some good banter around the introduction of the under-cover Black Widow as well.

I know the reality changed with the subsequent success and reaching wider audiences, the Disney acquisition, and making the universe family friendly. I just think the earlier movies, the 1s and 2s of IM, Cap, Thor had a slightly darker and more adult edge to the scripts, which I much preferred.

Just ran through this one (thanks for the pre-release delivery Zoom!) and slightly mixed feelings. The transfer looks pretty damn good, certainly doesn't feel dated and all of the effects work holds up nicely. Very much appreciate the Disney way of mixing the audio, means I can run it at halfway decent volumes without the neighbours getting blown three doors down (and, seriously, enough with the Atmouse stuff, they only really got it wrong for.. what, two releases? Everything since Black Panther has been just fine).

The film is still really good and the first flight of the Mark 3 remains one of the high water marks for Superhero films. From the moment it touches down it's clear the game has changed and pretty much nothing the ten rings (or, for that matter, the US Military) have can touch it. The third act does drop off a little, sadly, but the 'you know what... I am Iron Man' moment distracts from that nicely.

But... oooh dear some bits of this are dodgy when viewed in 2019. Don't get me wrong, they were dodgy back in 2008 too but think we're all a bit more aware of them now. The playboy parts are passable, more or less, but the flight attendants are definitely over the line (think about it, what part of 'employees dancing on a stripper pole while their drunk boss watches' is okay?) and while sweet dancing with Pepper is also more than a little iffy. Thankfully she does at least call him on that one (and explain *why* which is nice) but Tony just brushes it off then goes to get them drinks.

Tony in this film is a complete sleezebag basically, not just for the womanising but blowing off business meetings, keeping his supposed best friend (and business contact) waiting for three hours as he can't be arsed to get there on time, screwing over large parts of his company and employees (which I'm sure will never come back to bite him or anyone he cares about in the arse) with rash decisions and, oh yes, being a freakin' arms manufacturer. Yet apparently certain other superheroes are unlikable because they "don't smile enough". Hmm.....

Anyway looking forward to going through 2 and 3 again and the Marvel catalogue is more-or-less complete now (though... Guardians 1 please Disney?). Still hoping we get a standalone release of Thor as already have Ragnarok and while there's some nice stuff in the Dark World it's hardly begging for a double dip purchase.

I have to say the Blu Ray version, upscaled looks and sounds great, so I'd expect the 4K to be better. But as I'm only running on 55', I doubt it will make too much difference. I'm seeing some good deals on the 3 box set 4K. If you don't have BR version, they are all great films and not dated.

One of those rare comic book films that gets a 5/5 from me.

Can't wait to see this in 4K some day.

I take that as a vote for pubic hair and/or against weak ejaculations.

I've only seen the film once and liked it but will wait for price drops here.
Humour infused dialogue aside, the smug factor grates on me and degrades the supposed cool.

Enjoyed this and the 1st Thor film but lost interest in the rest of the MCU rubbish after those 2. How they milked that whole thing to death.

I also have a 55 inch display and IMO it’s the HDR that really makes the difference, without it the PQ improvement while present is marginal especially on a relatively small screen like ours but the HDR takes it to another level.

Yup. Would tend to agree with that. Especially with a lot of todays cgi laced 2K stuff.

The only discs that have wowed me with extra (often stunning) detail and colour (on my 55” OLED) are the true native 4K oldies (old as in 10/20/30 years).

I've said it before and I'll say it again - The difference between DC and Marvel has been in the casting. Marvel have nailed it pretty much every time. RDJ has the charisma to carry a film like Iron Man regardless of how preposterous the setup is. It's still a great watch and really did lay the foundations for the behemoth Marvel is now.

I was reading through the Blu-ray.com Iron Man 4K thread. Some members there were reporting excessive DNR on much of this release, and I almost decided not to buy it. Your review has helped to put my mind at rest, and I will be looking for a price reduction before buying. Cheers

Looks like there is some clear filtering going on just like Captain America.

I was underwhelmed by Cap UHDs due to this. A simple A-B comparison on my TV proved it and I was quite vocal about it. Sad that they did the same to IMs. Also the exclusion of the bonus discs for 1 and 2 meansvwe have to hold on to the existing BD sets if you like extras.
