Well as you can only get analogue out of the ipod you'll have to go with phono won't you ?

confused :~| ... AFAIK there is no optical output inside the headphone jack on an ipod - does your lead convert an analogue stereo signal into digital along the way ?

Or is this while your ipod is connected to something else ?

Your iPod or your Mac? The 3.5mm jack on an iPod isn't optical enabled as far as I am aware.

Aye, that's the correct cable to go from an Airport Express for instance, not an iPod.

I think I've lost the plot.

Yes - that's the cable I use for my mac mini or powermac to connect to my amp - it won't do anything digitally (AFAIK) for my iPod ...

The iPod specs on the apple page http://www.apple.com/ipod/specs.html say "3.5mm stereo headphone minijack" ... whereas on the mac mini for example they say "Combined optical digital audio output/headphone out (minijack)" - http://www.apple.com/macmini/specs.html ...

You sure we aren't talking at cross purposes here ?
