You won't get an Apple engraving, of course, but any jewellers or similar (the sort that supply trophies and the like) will be able to do it. However, you're relying on their hand-artistry - Apple uses a laser system.

so really i think as a gift for someone...i would be better off getting the apple one?

    dont want a shoddy result.

i suppose i could save a wee bit money wise on the purchase, but by the time i give someone else money to engrave it, i'd be back at square one?

Unless you can find someone with a computer aided etching system (in which case it might be quite expensive anyway) then Apple could well be your best bet. If it's a present, the fact that an Apple-etched iPod is shrink-wrapped in its box could be worth thinking about too.

You wouldn't save anything by not having Apple do it, you won't find big ipod discounts anywhere, maybe you can get £5 off from Amazon but then the engraving would easily cost that.

FYI I was a HD3 owner and have gone to an Ipod. IMHO it's better than the HD3.

However, my needs are different to most. I use it purely for incar use and for that the sony was terrible, at least the Ipod has loads of aftermarket car kits and even car manufacturers such as Merc offer full connection kits as part of there option list.

    I don't miss my HD3 Sorry

I don't know anything about these things but my logic tells me it will be cheaper to have something engraved by machine than by hand...(if you go professional) :)

EDIT: Sorry, I've edited my post. I'm going to try and not come accross as so opinionated about Apple in future - I think it is fair to say the majority of regulars on here are well aware of my view on them.

Below is my toned down post (i'll try and stick to my new policy in future...hehe)...

Surely if you are an adult and you have paid for your iPod and you are going to pay for your own personalized engraving you should be able to put on your property what ever the you want? I find it very unsavoury that on top of everything I don't agree with, they seem to find time to have the cheek to censor people's private messages too... :thumbsdow

I also think it's silly that you can't have the exact message you want on it, very arrogant of them to censor in this way.

It´s always sad to see censoring, but I think Apple might do this to avoid legal problems, rather than just being arrogant. They sell Ipods worldwide, and depending on the country you can get sued for all sorts of things. Some places might regard an Ipod with "adult" messages as something similar to porn, and have laws to prevent, for example, its sale to minors. And what about engravings that target specific persons or organisations, who could see these Ipods as libel/slander? Or how about racist or certain political messages - I live in Germany, and here you could get into serious legal troubles for messages that promote fascism.

As Apple both makes/sells the Ipods and does the engraving, I suppose they can be seen as responsible for the message-bearing product as a whole, and might thus not get away with "the customer is to blame, we were just following orders".

Is there a way to find out if a message won´t be engraved before ordering? I would like to see if I can get away with a Nano rebranded to "SONY".

I see what you are saying but I don't think it is that. See, it is simple, if it is illegal to have certain literature in some countries you just wouldn't take it there. For instance cannabis is legal to grow and consume for personal use in small amounts in a couple of territories in Australia - but you wouldn't dream of taking it back with you to the UK where the laws are different. Similarly, some types of over the counter medications and publications which are perfectly acceptable here are illegal in the Middle East so once again you would check with your travel agent before departure.

We live in a society where we value our freedom of speech extremely much. This is also a capatalistic society and if your money matters enough to this company for them to take it off you, your decision as what to engrave on it should lie with you.

Apple can very easily add a clause stating that messages engraved by individuals on their products are not a reflection of their own personal views and that you must be 18 to have adult material engraved on your iPod (if they want to be really stuck up).
    :)
