Ipod Nano connectivity problem

I've just bought a new ipod 2gb nano and I cannot transfer any music onto it. Itunes doesn't recognise the ipod and neither does the ipod updater, I charged up the ipod for 4 hours before I connected it to my computer.

I have used all the usb ports on my computer (resetting the ipod in between). I have downloaded the updated software from apple for the updater and itunes and still no luck. When I plug in the ipod it is recognised by the computer but that is it and also it does charge up the ipod.

I do only have a usb 1.1 (computer over 5 years old) I have read that this should still work but would be slow, is this correct? Also is it worth just buying a usb 2.0 card for my pc do you think this would solve my problem?
