If you dont mind having the old style model you can get a 20gb one (mac or pc) from the UK Apple site ( here ) for £279. Supposedly refurbs but everyone I know who has bought from there has received brand new ones.

Just for your information be aware that the European spec ipods... {New Style] Have the volume capped... and there have been many complaints with regard to this issue. As some people claim they cannot get the music volume loud enough on places where there is a lot of external noise... such as on a tube train.

The old style ones do not have this problem.

not strictly true - any 'old style' ipod running firmware 1.2.2 was capped in accordance with EU law (this was an identical firmware release to 1.2.1 and was only for European ipods)

however there is/was (about 2 months ago havent looked since) firmware 1.2.6 which im currently using and as far as i can tell it does not have a volume limiter.

I've just looked on the Apple site and 1.2.6 is still the most current firmware for Winpods. There was not a specific version for European models so i expect there would have been some outcry from other countries if all new Ipods shipped with volume limiting firmware just to be in accordance with one region's law.

Macpods are now up to 1.3. however i dont have a Macpod so havent followed their progress (they do seem to get better support though - lots more releases etc)

Obviously, the new style Ipods support diff thing such as on the go playlists/new games etc and so the firmware will always differ from the old style Ipods. Even if they do use volume limiting firmware it is very easy to change that firmware ( http://www.info.apple.com/usen/ipod/ is a good place to find them) to one that isn't limited.

The old style Ipod wasn't the loudest thing anyway; I use the earbuds that came with it and generally have to use about 90% volume if listening when walking down by a busy road/on the train etc and particularly if you use insensitive headphones (e.g. some of the more expensive Sennheisers) then you're almost certainly going to want a headphone amp as well..

    Yes.

I have owned one for about a year now and have had it die on me twice (one time it was sent back to the factory and i got a brand new one and second time i managed to upload to new firmware, which in fact was 1.2.6, and got it working again).

Despite this though I still think it's one the best things I've ever bought. Sometimes wonder how I coped without it - it just takes a couple of months to experiment with the best way to upload songs etc to find a way that works best.

I've had a quick play on the new Ipod but only to see what features were added/what it looks like - can't compare sound quality etc.

One thing i do find mysterious about the new Ipod is their decision to go for even less battery life (8 hours as opposed to 10). i'd almost say that i'd prefer having a much longer battery life and the same sized ipod rather than the thinner model... but hey that may be just me - i hate having to remember to plug it in if i know i'm going to be using it for a bit without access to a power point for a few hours.

Of course what you could do is buy a mac ipod. I was lucky enough to buy mine in the states... The only difference then is that you need thirdparty software such as Xplay or ephpod but the latter is free anyway. As such I'm running 1.3 on an old style 20gig ipod. But I also use in-ear style headphones... sony ones... they retail at about £30 and I have found these to be the best in terms of powerfull reproduction. Even better than my B & O ones.

neilo: i spent aaages perusing the Apple support boards trying to find the best way to get my Ipod working when it first died. Also when i first got it i found that the supplied software was abysmal (it didn't let me upload songs at all) In fact it is so bad I don't even let it install with the Ipod software installation. Lots of people seemed to attribute my (and most other people's problems) to the audigy firewire (which i was using) and tried to recommend me buying a dedicated firewire card.

Having just spent £300 on my Ipod i obviously didn't particularly want to spend another £30 on a firewire card for it.

Quickly i found out about Ephpod as Len mentions (which btw is only free if used on a Winpod as you have to pay for the Mac Opener which is required for a Macpod see www.ephpod.com) and found that to be perfect and has absolutely no problems uploading with my audigy.

Xplay i have also heard good things about though I've never tried it (again didn't feel like spending another £30 to just get the damn thing working).

    Hope that helps,

Feel free to ask me any questions though I'm away on hol for a week from tomorrow so won't be able to reply until i get back

My wife and I bought 30gb versions in Guernsey a couple of weeks ago. We were contented 20gb Archos users, but the Ipod is just that little bit better.
