see here for instructions. You shouldn't lose any music just by reseting, although some of your settings may resort back to defaults.

I've sometimes (rarely) had this happen on my mini ipod - and a soft reset has always sorted the problem.

My 20gb 4th gen Ipod died yesterday only 5 months old
Wont charge up, pc doesn't recognise it and its permentally on, the only thing on the screen is the Apple icon, tried a reset but to no avail, the apple icon disappears and is temporarilly replaced by a battery icon with an exclamation mark next to it and then goes back to the apple icon (dead battery i presume??) any ideas?? So got in touch with Apple and they are sending a box in the post for me to send it back, not very impressed to say the least. The worrying thing is when i was looking round the web for a fix the amount of people with problems on new ipod's was incredible, bloody hundreds of them
