I need to connect my iPod to my new car stereo which has an AUX line in but i don't want to use the headphone port as this is inferiour to using a true line-out. What i want is a connector that plugs into the bottom dock port and provides me with a proper balanced line out and a 3.5mm socket i can plug a jack-jack or jack-phono into. I have seen them, but now I cant seem to find one anywhere though!

I know the sort of thing you are talking about - as I bought a very similar item for my Nokia phone to turn the headset plug into a 3.5mm stereo jack....

Only one I can find for ipod tho is this one, which could be a little bit clumsy for in car use - tho you could coil up the excess cable and tuck it behind the dash out of sight?

Thanks mate, but i would prefer no cable at all, just a 3.5mm socket.

I'm stunned there are not more available!

That one seems nice... for both car and PC...

And for the price, you can cut the excess cable!

Also, and I know you said you didn't want a cable, but surely you will have a cable from your headunit to plug into the ipod, could you not use a USB to video cable? I have one for mine, which has the ipod usb on one end, and the other end has 3x rca (video, and L+R stereo).....

I'd have to check tho that it would work outputting music via it or if it is reserved only for video - would have thought it worked for music audio output!

Then oyu would have only one cable between your ipod and your headunit.....

    Or if your headunit doesn't have 2x RCA aux input, and only has a 3.5mm stereo aux input, then you could use this;

The reason i wanted just the 3.5mm socket was so i could use a couple of different types of cables/connector - 1 for the car and another in the house. I think i will have to just get both versions of that cable - but it's not listed on Amazon UK :(

Just plugged my ipod video into my AVR's AV inputs uisng the video/audio 3x phono AV connection, and played some music and it played fine..... Of course this is from the headphone socket!

But you should be able to plug this directly into the bottom of your Classic and straight into the RCA aux inputs on the back of your headunit

Sorry to hijack your thread but it is related, am I right in thinking then that there is no true line out from the headphone socket on the Classic? I want to connect mine up to a hifi with phono sockets, does this have to go through the dock connector?

You can connect to the (amplified) headphone out...

I use the send station line out connector and the sound quality is in a different league from using the headphone output.

I can't believe how hard it was to find a proper lead to do this from the dock connection:eek: Only one I kept finding was some horrible retractable one which I've seen in the flesh and the wire is about as thick as a headphone cable. Now I'm not a big cable snob but this looked weedy as anything. Eventually found a Nyko one at ink-uk.com and ordered that yesterday. They shipped it within a couple of hours so hoping it turns up today.

As far as im aware you cant get a "true" line out from the new ipods?

I have the sendstation "pocketdock" with the line out and USB that i used with my old nano. The sound quality was fantastic!

But, from the 5g video onward's you can adjust the volume of the line out with the clickwheel meaning it's not a true line out. It's a pain as my new 5g i use the volume limiter on it, and this means that when using the line out it's very quiet so i have to disable the volume limit everytime i want to run it through my marantz amp!!! :thumbsdow

The sound quality is also noticably poorer.
