IPhone to IPhone texting

Could any one out there tell me why when I send text messages to my friends IPhones they receive a different telephone number.I realise that IPhone to IPhone messaging is now free, but this has only happened in the past several days. Its causing utter confusion as my friends think I've changed my number. I've had the same number or almost 10 years and had my current IPhone 4S since May. Any ideas?

The phone is probably still "stuck" on the original number you had before you ported your own over.

Try doing this:

go to settings and turn of iMessage and Facetime. Then turn them both back on and your number will refresh itself. You may have to turn the phone on/off too after the above steps, I can't remember.

On my wife's phone, as well as the above, I had to go to settings / phone / my number. And put in your current number.

I think I turned iMessage and FaceTime off first, then changed the number, then turned it back on.
