Since the latest download of iTunes (v 10.5.1), the remote app stopped working on my iPhone. Every time it tried to connect to the library, it eventually gave up.
The fix was relatively simple - it was a firewall issue. I am running Windows 7 and the fix was to change the protocol type from UDP to TCP as follows:

- Open the Control Panel and select System and Security.
- Click Windows Firewall.
- Click Advanced Settings.
- Select Inbound Rules from the left hand pane.
- Select iTunes from the middle pane.
- Select Properties from the right hand pane.
- Select the Protocols and Ports tab.
- Change the Protocol Type from UDP to TCP.
- Click Apply.
