Iphone 4 Vodafone locked

Hi I am a new member to this forum, so firstly can I say a big hello to everyone here.

I have a 2nd hand Iphone 4 which I have found out to be locked to the Vodafone network (phone given free from the Freecycle website and not stolen).

I can not activate the phone upon starting up, as it is just saying wrong sim inserted. I do not have a Vodafone sim to test. How can i go about unlocking this phone so it would work with Plusnet (runs on ee network). All i want to do really is just use it as a mp3 player, it would be for my daughter as i realise how old the phone is, or maybe for her to play some simple games on it.

If i was to order a free Pay as You Go Sim from Vodafone, would it work just as a mp3 player and go through the activation process, or would I have to get a 10 pound topup to use the phone for 30 days please? Both the ICloud and Blacklist status are clean and I have the IMEI number and Serial numbers, just not the phone number
