iPhone 4 Facetime Questions & Answers

Hi all,
Just watched the endgadget review of the ip4, and was quite interested to see facetime in action. I understand that at the moment it can only be used via a wifi connection, however, one comment in the video caught my attention.

that being, that when a normal call is "transferred" to facetime, the call becomes a VOIP call, (hence an apparent increase in audio quality). Does this mean you would no longer be charged from your contract/payg minutes, but instead the call would be "free" over your wifi connection? If this is the case, then a good alternative to skype when calling fellow ip4 owners...?

It definitely isn't considered part of your calling plan, so is free entirely. But I wouldn't say it's a replacement for Skype since it's WiFi and iP4 only. Skype can be used across any and many devices and platforms, not just iP4's.

But you're right in principle.

i thought that might be the case, so the iphone will cut the original "network" connection and transfer to voip... looked seamless in the vid..

If that's right then as soon as you call (conventionally) another iPhone 4, in the background the two phones are working out what each other are, whether they have wi-fi, and then setting the connection ready for a seamless handover. Pretty impressive. Assuming it works!

There's not even need to start a standard call as Facetime can be initiated from the Contacts list directly.

How the two iPhones find each other's IP address is still somewhat of a mystery, but I'm sure we'll know how very soon.

Just wondering... if you make a normal call, then turn on facetime to show somebody something, is there an option to turn off facetime and return to the voice call?

Or is it just a case of you have to hang up completely and make another voice call?

Anyone tried it yet?

Any good?

Yes it's very good. Done 2 calls so far.

Those waiting for activating, connect your phone back to iTunes again. It seems if you do a restore from a backup, you then need to reconnect it again to enable FaceTime.

There does seem to be a slight delay in audio, but flipping round picture, and picture quality both very good.

You can also turn to landscape, and move your own picture around into any of the four corners. I tried pressing the home button during a FaceTime chat, it takes you to your homescreen, you can browse your phone, speak to the person you're on the call with, but they can't see you, it comes up saying paused. You simply tap the green bar at the top, and it takes you back to FaceTime.

Overall very impressed. As Apple said, they spent 18 months developing software that would never be seen. The seamless integration is quite extraordinary. Lets hope other devices and companies adopt Apple's open source FaceTime.

I think I found my problem....

You need to turn it on in Settings/Phone

Doh!! :suicide:

You can then access the face time button on the contacts page.
