iPad 1 Getting Laggy

My 16gb wifi iPad is two years old now and recently it seems to be getting a bit laggy, for example when typing URLs. Also a number of times when zooming web pages, the text becomes blurred and either doesn't sharpen at all or takes several seconds or scrolling the page a bit to sharpen.

Safari often crashes back to the home screen.

Would it benefit from being "wiped" and my stuff being reinstalled? I'm thinking along the lines of defragging. Even while typing this post it is lagging slightly.

I have seen reports a restore has improved things but I think its basically past its best. iOS 5 was the killer and the minute 256Mb of RAM is the real issue.

Definitely worth restoring as a new iPad and then adding all your stuff back manually rather than restoring a backup.

My old 3GS was horrible running on iOS 5.1 but i restored as a new phone then copied everything back as i would had i just got the phone and its running far far better now. I wouldnt have thought that the iPad 2 would be struggling to run any variant of iOS5!!

That's just apple phasing your ipad out so you have to upgrade!

the original ipad is still capable and not a machine that is past it as some may think.

I would suggest doing a hard reboot to clear the cache. Press and hold HOME and OFF buttons together and keep holding until the ipad reboots and you see the apple logo.

This should clear the cache and speed things along especially the browser.

If that fails, do a factory restore of the ipad and as bransoj suggests, don't restore a backup just reinstall the stuff you need.

EDIT: Forget to mention you can also clear data from safari. Go to settings - safari - clear cookies & data
