I personally thought this film was a definite case of way too many ingredients in the cake. I really enjoy good hard sci-fi but this film left me irritated in that it wanders too far from physics into meta-physics in my opinion. If it was an advert it would be for an American skincare product telling you repeatedly to hold on, here comes the science bit. The probability of success in the unfolding chain of events just gets wilder and wilder as the film rockets along from one increasingly speculatively shoehorned concept to the next. The score is painfully unmusical at times. The drowning out of the dialogue is the least of the major stylistic flaws. The simple fact is the scenes being blasted away by the audio are not nearly dramatic enough to warrant such utterly ear bleeding sonic savagery. This film did not blow my mind. It blew my eardrums and my patience that's all.

Thanks for the review. I am so happy they did not disappoint with the 4k transfer. imo, this is one of the best films ever made, period!!

I feel a bit let down that we do not get a immersive DTS-X or atmos soundtrack, even though the original dts-hd is already great, albeit is a tad excessive on the db levels

I haven't put this in myself, but I've heard people mention of elevated blacks, especially during the space scenes. Hoping that's not the case!

I assume this will look visually stunning, but i found the film to be far too drawn out, confusing & complicated at times, but i kind of got the gist of it in the end. It's really quite a boring film really & even the ending feels a little disappointing.
I think i struggle with Christopher Nolan films, especially one's like Inception...i turned that one off after half an hour, because i hadn't got the foggiest idea what was going on !! ?? His films try to be too clever at times, which can make the viewing feel complex.

Really tempted to get this but a little unsure which way to go.... £20 for the disc with all its IMAX goodness or £8 for 4K on iTunes and sacrifice the IMAX scenes (already have the regular blu Ray)

I loved this film and saw it twice on IMAX at the cinema which is very unusual for me, I haven't got 4k but I might pick up the blu ray if it's going cheep

In an age of mindless superhero films, clever and complex films should be applauded imho as there is far too much generic, formulaic pap around these days. Was personally blown away by this and Inception.

I totally agree. There seems very little in the way of there being something different. Hopefully, superhero films will have had their day before too long ! ?

Many of the concepts in interstellar have been looked at in other films. Putting them all together in the one plot is ambitious I'll agree but it's not really that clever. It's a bit like building a cocktail by asking for a shot of everything along a bar shelf.

And just like that mixture it's a mess.

Earth is dieing. But we'll just gloss over why the only fix is to leave it. Because...
Out of 100 billion other planets the only suitable ones to move to orbit a black hole. But Nolan glosses over why our nearest neighbour Mars orbiting a stable star is not a viable choice. Because...
And so on and so forth.

Yes, the black hole looks nice but it gets woefully little screen exposure. Probably sold to it as a big part by it's agent only for it to feel cheated as to what time it got in the movie. Overall, a bit like this viewer feels... :(

The BBC managed far better on a far lower budget in a two part episode of Dr Who.

well there you go chaps - movie reviews (and indeed movies themselves) always a matter of personal opinion

for me interstellar is a great film but I can fully understand the contrary views expressed - but the member who turned off inception after 30 minutes I really don't want to see your disk collection o_O

what cannot be doubted is that the sheer quality of this video presentation of interstellar is wonderful - simply beautiful to watch on a good display

Don't own it on disc, it was when it was last on TV. ( It was late at night & i suffer from severe M.E. so it's difficult to watch & concentrate at anytime, especially difficult, when this type of film needs your full attention ! )

      I'm very happy with my 4K / Blu Ray / DVD collection....THANKS !

not saying you shouldn't be happy with your collection - just that we clearly have very different tastes if you don't like inception as that is one of my all time faves

Interstellar does have some wonderful eye candy moments I do agree and certainly for testing if you can blow your speakers or damage your hearing this has got to be one of the go to disks.

I don't like the sarcastic way you put it across....in a day & age, when we're basically buying what's available on 4K releases, which means we probably own most of the same titles !

      As i explained it's not a film i've watched properly & may have a very different view, when & if i do ! ? ( I may buy it, when it's on "offer". )

Thanks for the review, have one question

The reviews states the TV and player used, but don't think it says what equipment was involved in the sound?

Would appreciate knowing this, as interesting to know which soundbar/av/speakers the AVForum staffers are running.

Still do not understand why this movie is available with Dolby Vision in the Apple 4k store but no DV is included on the physical 4k media. Very strange indeed.....

Awesome film. Probably Nolan's second best for me. I don't have a 4K telly yet, but even if I did, I wouldn't bother getting it because the IMAX experience was too lush for me to want to see it any other way, though the 35mm print I watched after the IMAX viewing was good.

I bought into the hype and went to the cinema to see this - big mistake.

It was all about the visuals and presentation, the script was woeful and the film was nowhere near as clever as it purported to be. It just left me cold.

I felt exactly the same after seeing Inception too. I don't think Nolan knows what to do with puny humans and seems absolutely clueless when it comes to female characters.

When someone new wants to hear my home system I always put this on. Was lost in the cinema, watching in your home environment with a bit of concentration and you really appreciate it
