Intermittent Time Machine backup failure

Time Machine is failing every so often. It's not on every hourly incremental backup but it is happening quite a few times each day.

I tried to use Disk Utility to repair the drive, as directed, but it wouldn't do it as it couldn't unmount the drive. Don't know why (although... see below).

Set up isn't ideal, I know: I have a 4TB external drive, partitioned so 1.5TB is for Time Machine and 3.5TB for media, which is manually backed up elsewhere. It's where the iTunes (I'm on Mojave) library is – if iTunes is open I guess that could be preventing the unmounting?

Could it be a sign that the drive is on the way out? It's almost five-and-a-half years old. Should I be looking to replace with a dedicated Time Machine drive and another for media? Also thinking ahead as my 2012 Mac Mini can't be expected to carry on for that much longer. At some point it will be replaced, almost certainly with another mini.
