Interesting news regarding region 1 at the Optoma RD50

As you guys probably know the Optoma RD50 and RD65 are still not available in the Netherlands and Belgium.
The Benelux distributor is going to have the first Optoma's in April.

One very interested news item they told me is the fact that they claim Optoma has solved the NTSC region 1 problem. After reading all the problems regarding this NTSC matter on this Forum, I had notified the distributor about this problem.
Last week they told me that Optoma has made a software update somewhere in the beginning of February and that the Optoma now plays NTSC region 1 dvd's flawless when connected with Component and/or DVI/HDMI. Only the S-video connection still gives problems.

Razor, maybe you can check this with Optoma in the UK to see if this story is really true.

I would like to have this confirmed from different sources before I really believe this.

Thanks for the info, it would be music to my ears if the NTSC issue is solved. I will contact Optoma and report.

Hi

It would also make me very happy (i was about to order the hd45), but i had this from Optoma this morning...

"Dear James,

Thank you for your e-mail.

The RD50 is not NTSC compatible and there is currently no ‘fix’ for this. ThemeScene is however looking into solving this issue, but there is no certainty with regards to when this will happen.

Sorry I could not be of more help.

Kind regards

Mind you, The right hand doesn't always know what the left is doing eh? :lease:

It's certainly an improvement over the position they took last month when i was told they had stopped looking into it.

Any news Razor (altough Optoma are hardly the fastest)

All I want to know is that there WILL be a fix....

Otherwise I'll end up with the HD45

Don't want to spoil the party mood but Optoma Europe is based in the UK
still one can but hope,

Just a small update. According to the Distributor over here the news regarding the fix came from the UK. They will get the Optoma's supplied from the UK. So if there is a fix it should be the same all over Europe. What I further understood is that they will follow some kind of training program in March to be able to give proper service to their customers. Maybe they have learned from the poor service in the UK you are all complaining about.

I have my fingers crossed.....mind you I only have 3 R1 dvds but still....

I have contacted Optoma and had to leave a message. Will yet you know as soon I get a call back. :smashin:

Hi guys..

Well i've asked permission to copy and paste my reply from Optoma (still waiting)

But basically....

I don't think I'll be buying an RD50

sorry but no fix

For the record

ThemeScene(tm) is a specialist European Home Cinema brand. We take great care to ensure that the European video (PAL) performance of our products is exemplary. In the development of our RD TV range of products it was necessary to compromise the performance of NTSC to ensure the best possible PAL performance. We recognise that the NTSC performance is unacceptable to a few of our customers who are attracted to the ThemeScene(tm) brand because of our enviable reputation for image quality. To avoid misleading customers we have taken the step of removing NTSC from the product specifications. Although NTSC is not normally used in Europe we accept that we have underestimated the importance of NTSC reproduction to a small, but valued, group of UK customers. We will continue to attempt to find a solution to this issue but can make no assurances as to when, if at all, this will become available and what form it will take. It is not possible to resolve this issue with a software only upgrade. We will ensure that NTSC reproduction is fully supported to the superior standard expected by our demanding customers on all future models in the RD TV range. Please be assured that the ThemeScene(tm) range of Home Cinema front projectors provide excellent image quality for both PAL and NTSC formats.

There is a solution available a PC can solve it so all Optoma have to do is give us all a nice shiny new HTPC.

Yes :lease:

presumably the RD50 won't work with 60 hrz xbox settings, really I could live without the NTSC videos or I could use my pc as you guys do, but the 60 hrz xbox thing for me would be an issue. It's a nice looking set though. Is it HDTV ready?

Yes it is HDTV ready, but no, the xbox won't work (i'm in exactly the same position)

It's a shame because the RD50 would have originally been my first choice, but the lack of 60 hrz option is a bummer, it's really only to do with xbox live for me, some games (burnout3 as an example) require you to have a 60hrz option to play with your friends, (using CRT tv's) amd the chances are that xbox 2 will be more 60hrz than 50 hrz. What sort of price is the RD50 going for now? has the NTSC issue affected the price?

Hi everyone

I have just got off the phone to Optoma and they have confirmed that there is no fix for NTSC/60hz playback. As I thought. So anyone saying there might be a fix is unfortunately wrong. On the subject of xbox's just do not select the 60 hz option in the dashboard menu. The xbox will then display at 50hz althought the picture from the 60hz setting is ment to better.

Oh and Optoma now have the HDMI/DVI convertors in stock, mines in the post.... :)

ntslik....

Please dont keep posting that letter, it really does bring back very bad memories. :lease:

Hey Razor, i understand what your saying, but that's not the issue, the issue for me is xbox live, on some games playing online in 50 hrz makes you a lepper and you can never find anyone to play with, cause they are all in 60 hrz games !! If the price had dropped to reflect the lack of NTSC playback it might be worth considering, but for Optoma to simply take NTSC off the list and keep the price the same seems a bit poor, However it is still a nice looking TV, if there was say £500 between this and the sagem HD D45 it might make the RD50 an attractive alternative. But if it's priced the same as the Sagem, then i'm going to have to go sagem, even with the smaller screen
