HDTV set for major increase in numbers

The number of high-definition television sets in UK homes is set to increase dramatically by 2010 as broadcasters and manufacturers go on the offensive with major marketing campaigns.
In 2004 the number of HDTV sets numbered only around 30,000, almost half that of the leading European country Germany, which is estimated to have around 60,000 sets.

A report by research and business intelligence outfit Informa Telecoms & Media suggests that the number of HDTV sets will double in 2005 to around 60,000, but will then soar to around 2.7 million over the next five years.

The UK is currently the eighth highest country in the world HDTV take-up rates, with the US currently the market leader with 11.4 million sets and due to see a four-fold increase to around 48 million by 2010.

Japan and China are also expected to lead the HDTV revolution over the next five years, with a combined total of almost 30 million sets, up from 6 million in 2004.

Adam Thomas, media research manager at Informa and author of the report, said: “By 2010 the HDTV sector will have evolved from a few early-adopter countries, to a thriving global market, where all players along the value chain have recognised the benefits of HDTV, and are investing accordingly.

“With consumer demand growing, greater content availability and the price of high definition sets falling, HDTV is on track to becoming a mass-market reality.”

BSkyB is currently warming up for a major push for its HDTV system in the coming months.

I suspect that the growth will also be fuelled by manufacturers no longer making 'standard def' sets and making all models HD Ready so people will buy HD sets even if they have no intention of ever receiving HD images.
