Hi all, total PC technophobe asking for assistance!
had my Medion pc tower taken in for repair as it was totally infected with all manners of nasties (even though i was supposed to be protected with with mcaffee product) techniician charged me £40 & for me to reinstall mcaffee before going back on the internet, which i did but now although i can access the internet, some sites like hotmail, yahoo & most importantly itunes (for the new version) wont allow me to download anything, hotamil & yahoo just go to a blank screen on signing in & itunes 10.5 just stays on the "click to download new version" screen. i can view youtube though?
i have played about with the firewall, internet settings, help screen etc etc but im getting no where.
any & all help out there would be greatly appreciated! if the model number of the pc is needed i can get that at home tonight, my isp is sky & running windows vista.
thanks
thanks

Hi,

A couple of things I can think of. If you've checked firewall settings, have you checked McAfee's settings for downloading of attachments (I can't remember where the option is located off the top of my head)?
The second thing.. what browser are you using? If it's IE, have you tried downloading via Firefox or Google Chrome?

i'll check mcAfee's settings tonight but im pretty sure ive gone down that route, also i cant use any new browsers as i cant download anything, tried that already. its IE8 im using.
very very strange as i just cant think why its letting me to most internet things but not all?!!

Good luck. If it is an IE8 issue, it may be down to add-ons.
Try going to the run command (Windows Key & "R") and type: iexplore.exe -extoff
See if you can download anything that way, if you can, there's an issue with an add-on.

Personally I would advise you to get rid of McAfee and install something else - it let the nasties in last time so will probably allow them in again.

It does sound like McAfee is blocking the downloads, so as a temp measure you could try disabling it and see if you can then do a download from a known safe site. If not you know the problem is somewhere else.

thanks both for that but ive already having mcAffe off but still the same problem. im no expert but im totally purplexed!
did the engineer put something in place to prevent dowloads after finishing with my pc?

I doubt the engineer would have done anything to block downloads, but it is possible

It could be worth doing a full reset of IE to see if that helps - Tools > Internet Options > Advanced tab > Reset
