Been reading about the intel NUC celeron model.

Seems like it might be a bit quicker than my current revo 3700. [and smaller!]

But are they any good? Gonna be running OE's XBMC on it.

    Built this spec

Im running the Core i3 version and it runs great. Using the Aeon nox skin with the showcase mod and its very smooth.

You can hear the fan ramp up when your scrolling through the movie covers but its silent when playing films.

My Celeron NUC arrived yesterday - running XBMC (OpenElec) from USB stick perfectly, using the Ace skin (really like this skin).

I did put 4GB ram in which is probably overkill for OpenElec.

So pleased I went for one of these - have messed about with Android/Pivos type boxes, but for a tiny additional outlay this thing is miles ahead in performance particularly navigating around the interface.

I bet OpenElec flys on the NUK, It runs amazingly well on a Raspberry Pi, I now run the Plex forked version of OpenElec on the Pi now, just ordered a few 2nd hand Lenovo ultra small form factor PC's off ebay for much cheapness, core2duo based but should be fine for media centre. I am still curious about the NUK though and have gone to buy one a few times!

    The model number is BOXDCCP847DYE.

Last time I checked there weren't any on eBay. But Amazon and dabs had some.

I got mine from Lambdatek in the end - service was superb :)

Is there a downside to this vs the Core i3 version? Can it do HD Audio in OE Frodo?

I just bought one of these from overclockers yesterday.

I've been looking around for a while for something to replace my old TViX 6500 media player, as I'm moving that to a different room.

Anyway, I'm a bit disillusioned with the whole streamer scene at the moment, so I thought I'd give this a try. Hopefully it'll work out okay.

I've never tried XBMC in the past as I've never had a need, but I'm quite looking forward to it.

Any tips or pitfalls I should be looking out for with XBMC/OpenElec configuration would be much appreciated.
One of the things I've come across through reading various forms, is that it may be an issue using this unit with a Harmony remote, but it doesn't seem to be insurmountable. I'll find out soon enough I suppose.

    Cheers
    Hamish

I would update the bios as I believe it fixes some thermal issues and also assign more memory to the graphics as the default is quite low.

Im running on windows so cant offer any advice on openelec.

Be careful with the crucial msata hdd. I had the 64gb one and it stopped being detected after a fortnight.

I googled the problem and it seems to be common, none of the fixes posted worked.

Celerons don't have GMA HD 4000, they simply have Intel GMA HD Graphics.

GMA HD 4000 (i3/i5 based NUCs) is 16 Execution Units and includes Quicksync support.
GMA HD 2500 (most Ivy Bridge desktops) is 6 Execution Units and includes Quicksync.
GMA HD (Celeron and Pentium) is 6 Execution Units and no Quicksync support. Clock speeds are very low on the Celerons, particularly in ULV form.
