are there and integrated amps out there with an inbuilt DAC that is of reasonable quality? budget up to £1000

Yes, well at least if you go s/h.
As an example, I believe that there's a version of the Bel Canto S300i that has a digital input. I've just read a review of a Consonance valve integrated with a built in DAC, though being fair, you'd need to partner it with a pair of highly efficient speakers to really give it credit, and 99% of users don't have those.

Another option would be a s/h AV processor like a Linn 5103 (which by default will have a built in DAC), then put a good stereo power amp on the backend. That would be an interesting pre-power combo.
