Spidermanalf alerted me to this one and I wasn't going to buy it at first because it's non-anamorphic NTSC, but the cheapness of the disk (check it out at CD-WOW) proved too much of a pull and in the end, I'm glad I went for it :)

It could be called a Hong Kong version of the Sixth Sense but that would be an insult. While there is certainly the common fact that the lead characters see dead people in both movies, this is where the similarities end.

The cast is strong and the acting on the whole is very good. The movie also has a nice soundtrack (musically), that sounds more Westernised than you would expect from a HK movie. (The DTS soundtrack on the disk is decent also.)

The plot exuded some very nice professional qualities and doesn't reveal all until the very end, which was a nice touch.

There are a few scares in here and the special effects, though not up to Hollywood budgets, do the job extremely well and are effective. I certainly jumped on several occasions and some scenes really did creep me out.

I can say no more without giving out some of the plot so I will just say that, for me at least, this was much scarier than The Ring :smashin:

    7/10 from me :)

One final point - the R3 is non-anamorphic 1.85:1 and they have deemed fit to stick the subtitles in the black bar underneath the image, so I was forced to watch it using a 14:9 zoom rather than the usual 16:9 zoom (which would've cropped the top of the image)

No  but I've made my keyboard sticky again. I was waiting for your comments on this one mate. Not sure about the placement of those subtitles tho. Is it still worth me picking up.?

    LOL @ your keyboard :D

There's no other release (bad choice of word :D ) of it as far as I know, so you may as well. It looks alright in 14:9 - at least it has the advantage that the scan lines are less visible. Subtitles are good too, only spotted one typo :)

To be honest, it's so engrossing a movie that within 10 mins you're totally absorbed and forget you're watching it in 14:9 :)

Given the choice between having this version and not having it all, I'd have to say that I'm glad I own at least a copy of it (and it is widescreen after all, so nothing missing). It's such a good film :)

I don't think you'll be disappointed mate. Don't get in too quick though as they have to send me a replacement for mine :D 'cause it skipped during the second half :(

SG - I haven't seen this yet, but I really recommend you check out Dark Water if you haven't seen it yet. You can pick it up from DDDhouse for about £3, I watched it last week and thought it was great. I didn't think much of The Ring but this is by the same director and i'm sure you'd enjoy it.

    Dark water specs:

    Region 3
    DTS 6.1 ES
    16:9
    DVD-9

That's all the info it has on the back of the box. The picture looks fine on my 21" tv in widescreen mode, but when I watched it on my projector there was a black border around the picture of about a inch where the picture wasn't projected.

Not sure about that, but as I said it's fine on my Sony 21". Anyway for £3 you can't go wrong - DTS 6.1 for £3

    Just to alert you guys.

If you haven't already watched your copies of Inner Senses, do so ASAP. I got a replacement disk from CD-WOW and it had the same fault so I have now gone for a refund.

Some investigation has revealed that lots of the disks are affected, so much so that one HK site (I don't know which one) is reported to no longer be taking orders for IS.

    You have been warned!

I am hoping they now re-master it at some point as it's frustrating not to be able to own this great movie :(

Dark Water says DTS 6.1 on the box, but it doesn't switch my amp to 6.1 mode like every other 6.1 DVD, it just stays in DTS 5.1.

Same here. Watched it last night. I think it's a printing error on the case.

It also didn't look like 1.85:1 to me. More 1.66:1.

My amp only displays "DTS" when playing so I didn't notice wether it was 5.1 or 6.1.

What did you think of Dark Water Squirrel?

:( Sorry mate - thought you'd like it, at least it didn't cost you much.

We must have different taste in Jap Horror then - I personally didn't think much of Inner Senses. Did you find DW too slow?

Don't worry. It was entertaining enough and I'm glad I watched it, but I couldn't watch it again so that's why I sold it :)

It wasn't a bad film at all, it's just that it wasn't remotely scary for me and you know that scene ......

    SPOILER, highlight below

... in the lift, near the end? When the girl flies toward the woman? Well I just laughed at that bit, particularly at how poor the SFX were.

    END OF SPOILER

It wasn't too slow either, just that within the pace, it was uneventful. It started out very promisingly but just never picked up from that. I also had this feeling of "I've seen this all before, nothing new here".

BTW, I didn't realise Dark Water was from the same director as Ringu. Ringu was another film I didn't like, much prefer the remake :)
