Infra-red remote control - on a laptop?

daft question here

If a laptop has an infra-red port (usually used for printers / phones?), could I use a remote control for Windows Vista media center with it direct or do I need a USB remote eye thingy?

Now I'm totally confused with that remark. What do I need a reciever for? What is the differance between the infra-red port on a laptop (if they have one) and a reciever?

What I was woundering was if anyone has used a windows remote control for Media center with a laptop with a built in infra-red port or do I need a seperate infra-red thingy to pluyg into the laptop to recieve the signals form the remote control.

I tried my Xbox 360 HD-DVD remote on my lappy for MCE .... it didn't work.
