I am currently putting my CDs onto MP3 and have two Sony DVD drives. One however is decidedly slower than the other.

What speed should I be getting for copying a CD to MP3 and anyways I can improve this ??

(the drives are in DMA mode and they have both been cleaned)

the slower the ripping speed the less errors you will get in your mp3's

would also help to know which ripping programme, I'd recommend EAC ( http://www.exactaudiocopy.de )

which if left on max speed will rip a cd (for me in an ageing pioneer dvdr drive) in about 3-4 mins
