The highly sought-after in-game PS3 CrossMediaBar could be out this year. Which is a little unsurprising, given rumours hinted it would be included in previous firmware v2.0.

Still, Sony US spokesperson Paul Purdy decided to confirm its 2008 appearance to The Game Reviews at the Consumer Electronics Show.

When this year is still unclear, with Sony Europe offering no further comment on proceedings.

We would hazard a guess at sooner rather than later, but we as in me also suggested Monster Madness would be one to keep an eye on.

The CrossMediaBar or XMB is the PS3 menu currently only accessible by exiting your game, preventing you from changing soundtracks, sending messages, or fiddling with other bits and pieces on the fly.

This will allow us to listen to our own music while in game?

I also really hope it adds bluray xmb too.

Does the 360 XMB let you chat to mates across Live, regardless of whether they are in your game or not?

In fact, what DOES it do?

Yes, you can have a chat with a friend whilst in games using your own dedicated channel and not the game channel.

It also allows you to send and recieve messages, view your gamercard (or those of others), see who's on line, play or change music, change your on-line status if you don't want to be bothered by other people and probably a few other things.

Cross game invites are a cool feature too (friend sends you an invite for the game he is in and if you accept, you go right there, regardless of what you're doing at the time - obviously you may have to swap discs!)

I just hope Sony planned this from the start, otherwise some features may not work with certain games.

I have to say this is the one side of the PS3 that is really holding it back for me.
I've never had a 360, most of my gaming has come from the PC where you can also chat with friends while out of a game using any number of applications.
For me being able to chat and then join various games through out the night and the chat stay open is more important than in game XMB.

I really don't understand this obsession with getting in game XMB
If I'm gaming I certainly don't want to be listening to any music that isn't part of the game surely doing so is putting you at a disadvantage against the players that aren't listening to music i.e. ME!
I also don't want to message friends whilst in game if they want me they should be able to join the chat session I have open and talk to me with out any message being exchanged like I can on the PC.

If the above was sorted I wouldn't need in game XMB
Until it is I think most of my best gaming nights will still be on the PC and not the "games console"

This is good news, but it was inevitable to be honest. For me personally this is a
much needed feature. Now all I want is a confirmed release date. :smashin:

The main thing that the in game xmb will be useful for me personally, is reading a message without having to exit the game. Listening to music while I play is not really something I would use though.

About time! Not having the messaging system while in-game effectively killed my short stint of PS3 online gaming, getting hold of people who were already in a game was impossible and made everything a nightmare!

Game invites through the XMB should be next on their list.

When people refer to "in game XMB", they mean all of the above - chat, messaging and music.

I frequently listen to music or podcasts where it doesn't put me at a disadvantage e.g. playing offline, or a sports game like Sensi Soccer.

In any event, I don't think we'll see these features before Home. I'd guess October.
