Important Message on my HP laptop

Hi, hope you can help & apologies if im in the wrong section but i keep getting a flagged message which says that it is an important message & that I need to do a backup, I have had my pc for just under a year & I have never done this. I have tried to do this several times but when I put the DVD in it seems to take an age to do the back up. It was only on 36% after approx 7 hours. Is this normal? What information does it actually back up??

Any advise would be appreciated.

Windows 7 will prompt you to do a complete disk backup, so that's a lot of data. You can change the settings so it only backs up your data (for example the Documents folder) which should be much quicker.
