I've been trawling the UK both physically and internet'elly and haven't come accross a single unit so I am considering buying one on import. Other than ebay imports can anyone reccomend any sites?

The only one I have found is at play-asia.com here and it's a good price at £125.89 including postage but I am concerned I may get done for tax on it's way in.

Has anyone else bought from abroad and been successful with avoiding the dreaded import tax?

    DVDboxoffice.com Canadian Site:http://www.dvdboxoffice.com/gme/360/products/90240659

    Approx. £136.25 including shipping.
My order status: Order will be processed shortly.

From thier website: DVDBoxOffice.com does not pay for International Duty or taxes. If a shipment incurs any such charges the customer is solely responsible.

Cheers Garrif, love an update as and when you receive your drive.

    Anyone else bought from abroad?

Mines on order from Play-asia, if going by buying other stuff from abroad I can add about £25 (duty etc)to the £125 so not gonna be cheap but I should have it soon, and it's cheaper than ebay :)

I've also been trawling the net trying to find one of these buggers. The Play Asia deal looks good but you do have to add in approx £30 in customs charges on top of the unit price and delivery charge. From other postings i've read, it also appears that you don't get a copy of KK with their units. Oh, and the remote is in Japanese. Reasons enough for me to cancel my order and look for an Amercian unit instead (still looking.)

    TT.

Videogameplus.ca has a limited amount in stock right now. I just ordered one and it cost me just under £135 including shipping. That's £5 more then the UK retail price but I'm not fussed. It is supposed to be region free for HD-DVD's but I'm not sure about regular DVD's.

I used to use DVD Box Office all the time and they were a very reliable company. Obly reason i dont use them now is because prices are cheaper to buy from Playusa and Movietyme etc.

I bought from Movietyme and am very happy. I paid £30 more than UK list price but that included all import taxes and courier delivery. I ordered on a Friday late in December and it arrived exactly a week later in time for Christmas.

Movietyme's big weakness is their lack of response to emails and the fact they don't include any kind of receipt with goods. But without them I wouldn't have an HD-DVD player (or over 90 HD-DVD discs) so I'm a happy bunny.

Moogle, my understanding on the region coding issue is that it's the console that sets the region code, not the player. So, if you have a UK 360, you're region code will be 2. This only applies to standard DVDs though as you quite rightly say, there is no region lock-out for H-DVDs.

    TT.

Hmm... that's interesting. It doesn't bother me really though as the majority of my DVD's are region 1 and my 360 is a US one. I also have a regular multiregion DVD player for the few region 2 DVD's I own.

Play-asia for me. Not fussed about the remote being Japanese as I already have one. Little bit miffed about King King... I knew before I ordered at least though :)

Still in 'preparing order' state though. Hmph.

Thanks for all the responses people. I'm going to take a look at movietyme. I was going to go with PLay-asia but I didn't realise about the remote being japanese and although I don't need a remote (already have the one that came with the 360) I think the japanese lettering might impact on the re-sale value on ebay ;)

Just one slight warning on the MovieTyme package in case you're picky. The units seem to have been sourced from Canada. This has no bearing on the drive or remote but does mean that the copy of King Kong included has a mixture of English and French text all over it.

I ordered from MovieTyme and got my unit today. Few probs with delivery as the Courier (City Link) really messed up. Once I got a tracking number from MovieTyme I was able to chase up the delivery. I have the unit now and I am impressed. Comes with Remote Control and King Kong. Dont worry about the post above King Kong is 100% English you can select foreign subs etc, but you can do that on any UK DVD release.

cheers irascian, to be honest I have managed to source a UK one now so won't be ordering from abroad.

    Thanks for the advice.
