Can i use 6ohm speakers with an 8ohm av receiver?

probably....... the amp is likely rated for 4 to 8 ohm...... in any case, be careful and you will be fine

It's a marantz SR4200. 70watts 8ohms
The speakers are Denon SCM51 15-75watts 6ohms

Am i right in thinking as long as i dont crank it right up i will be fine?

oh the marantz is a reasonably capable machine, im sure you will be fine, as you say, if you keep it sensible.

lol i have the parents and neighbours issue also...... you'll always manage to find a time when the house is empty and be tempted! In my case, i couldnt listen to a movie at the sort of levels likely to induce damage, i find reference level would make my ears bleed after not too long!
