Will soon have a bit of spare cashola and instead of having my laptop sitting in front of my tv acting as my HTPC which all looks rather untidy I've decided to buy myself a dedicated jobby to sit beside my tv.

    Specs are:

    Shuttle SG33G5M Barebone black Intel G33 ,775, PCI-E, 3xSATA, GbLAN, 250W PSU
    http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.aspx?sku=338645
Case wise i think these things look pretty cool and trendy

    Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 2.67GHz 1333Mhz Socket LGA775, 4MB, BOXED w/fan
    http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.aspx?sku=338082

    OCZ Gold DDR2 PC5400 2048MB KIT, w/two 1024MB PC5400 XTC, CL4-4-4-12
    http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.aspx?sku=320734
With the price of ram quite cheap would i be better of going with 4gb as i will be using vista?

    2no. Western Digital Caviar SE16 750GB SATA2 16MB 7200RPM
    http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.aspx?sku=337088
2no. 750gb HD's are cause i do a heck of a lot of HD TV downloading, the wife and i watch practically watch every sci-fi/supernatural/good tv show going.

    Point of View GeForce 8800GTS 640MB, GDDR3, PCI-Express, DVI/Tv-Out, Retail
    http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.aspx?sku=327560
The thing will also be used as a games machine hence the 8800GTS

    LG GBW-H10N Super Multi 4x BD-R/ 2x RE Blu-Ray - Beige (Retail)
    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CD-049-LG&groupid=701&catid=10&subcat=
Would i be better of getting 2 seperate units or waiting till a 2nd gen drive arrives from someone else?

I understand that things can get quite hot/nosiy but this will be sitting on top of a unit so there will be airflow all around it and when it is used it'll will be in conjunction with a sound system so would i hear it?, i understand the above unit will be quite expensive but I'm prepared to spend upwards of a grand+ for this thing to get something that looks cool:cool:, will run everything i throw at it and please the wife at the same time:thumbsup: (queue blatant suckup) seeing as you guys are waaaay more knowledgeable than me in these matters i would appreciate any comments you would have r.e. the internals but not the case as i really want one of these. Fire away...

seems way overkill for a HTPC. Are you planning on gaming on it ?

    Few comments:

The 250W PSU is far too small for that setup

    Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 2.67GHz 1333Mhz Socket LGA775, 4MB, BOXED w/fan
Have you considered a Q6600 Quad Core ?

    OCZ Gold DDR2 PC5400 2048MB KIT, w/two 1024MB PC5400 XTC, CL4-4-4-12
2Gb will be fine but go with 6400 / 8500 rather than 5300/5400

    2no. Western Digital Caviar SE16 750GB SATA2 16MB 7200RPM
How are you planning on getting the HD TV shows to the PC ?

    Point of View GeForce 8800GTS 640MB, GDDR3, PCI-Express, DVI/Tv-Out,
Cool card have one myself (just not in my HTPC!)
What res is the TV youre hooking up to ? Will need to be >1650*1080 to make use of that card

    LG GBW-H10N Super Multi 4x BD-R/ 2x RE Blu-Ray - Beige (Retail)
Do you need a BR writer ? The Pioneer BDC202 player is cheap.

That LG drive you listed only plays and records Blu-ray so no HD-DVD. Might be worth waiting for the new LG GGW-H20LI dual drive coming soon (or just get the Pioneer Blu-ray and use the xbox 360 external hd-dvd drive).

Cheers, i thought the multi drive was a duel one, would prefer a single drive solution that plays everything

    Hi bongo123,

Did you go ahead and order your HTPC? Any feedback, I've just bought the same chasis as you, I also will go for the same processor and 2GB RAM, how are the Western Digital 750GB HDD are they noisy or quite quiet?

    Regards,
    Stuart

Been reading this thread with interest.

Can anyone answer the following questions please?

    - The new LG Blue Ray / Hd player - is this out yet / any release date if not? Black should look great with this chassis.

    - I want to record, pause, playback tv from my Virgin Digi box - can anyone recommend a TV Card that will work with this unit and offer this functionality.

    - Does it have Optical out to hook into Surround sound?

I assume you can then stream video, music, pictures onto this little beast and playback on your TV? Should make my VCR and DVD Player defunct.

I'd really skip the Shuttle and get a larger case. You'll probably want to add more hard drives as you go along. Better cooling too, and more space to work in, have larger CPU HSF etc etc.

I'd get a midi tower, or full size ATX HTPC case.

Prob is I want it to sit under my TV - so has to be quite small and compact - and also a reasonably nice looking piece of kit

Edit: This case gets away with it by 0.5cm!!!

Can anyone suggest what TV Card I need to be able to record from my Virgin Digi Box? I want to be able to record and pause TV and it needs to fit snuggly into this Shuttle case. Woujd this one do the trick?

    http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.aspx?sku=326953

I've no idea with TV cards!

PS - how does this sound?

    - Shuttle Case: http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.aspx?sku=338645
    - LG Dual Format BlueRay/HdDVD Player/DVD Recorder: http://www.kikatek.com/product_info.php?products_id=60110&source=froogle
    - Hitatchi 1TB Hdd: http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.aspx?sku=335460
    - 2GB DDR RAM: http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.aspx?sku=329156
    Intel Duo Core 2.67ghz: http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.aspx?sku=338082

NOt planning on using it for games - just a media centre with the ability to get rid of my DVD player and VHS recorder. Any suggestions / recommendations? Specifically interested in which TV card to get.

Will I need a WiFi card - or can I just run an Ethernet to my router and access it that way?

That TV card does digital and analogue. For the digibox you only need analogue and something like a PVR150 would be fine and much cheaper.

I have a couple of questions I hope someone who has this box can answer:

    - Does the box have Optical Out to hook into Surround Sound? If not - could this be added somehow?

    - HOw many PCI slots are there? I will be using one with my TV Card - If I wanted to add an advanced graphics card - would this be possible on top of my TV Card?

    - HOw many bays are there? I would be adding a 750gb/1TB hdd and LG Hdd/BlueRay DVD Player - so thats two - any capacity for a third hdd internally?

    - The box has Ethernet - so I assume I could run into my router and access across the network - i.e. no need for wireless?

Any help would be great - hoping to order this soon :D

    http://global.shuttle.com/product_detail.jsp?PI=784#

Yes it has Optical S/PDIF output (Digital Audio)

    1x PCI-Express (16X) supports 8 GB/s data transfer - For graphics
1x PCI (32 bit) for TV card

    Storage bays: 1 x 5.25", 2 x 3.5" (1 internal)
    so 1 x 5.25 = DVD and 1 x 3.5 = drive and then 1 external 3.5 spare
hence why a dedicated media center chassis might be a better choice

    Yep - Gigabit LAN Controller
Marvell 88E8056 Ethernet network controller (Gigabit)
    Supports 100 / 1.000 MBit/s operation
    Supports Wake-on-LAN (WOL)

    Hi tinnners....

Would really appreciate your thoughts on what I am planning to order. I am also not sure what you mean by the above??? Would I perhaps need to upgrade to the 300w PSU for an extra £70?

    - Shuttle SG33G5M Barebone black Intel G33 ,775, PCI-E, 3xSATA, GbLAN, 250W PSU
    - Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz Socket LGA775, 8MB, BOXED w/fan
    - OCZ DDR2 PC6400 2048MB KIT, Titanium XTC, w/two 1024MB, CL4-4-4-15, EPP
    - Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000 750GB SATA2 32MB 7200RPM
    - Hauppauge! WinTV-PVR-150MCE, PCI, Low Profile, Tv-card w/radio, Bulk
    - Shuttle PC23 Internal 23-in-1 Card Reader USB2.0 for XPC
    - Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop 1000, with Pound Key, keyboard/mouse, USB, Ret

Is there much difference between 6400 and 8500 RAM? Also do you recommend 4gb rather than 2gb of RAM? May use the HTPC for games...but main use will be media.

May consider adding a graphics card at a later date. Will also be adding the LG BlueRay / Hd drive once its released.

Also been looking at this TV Card: Hauppauge! WinTV-HVR1100, Hybrid Card, PCI, Analog Tv-Tuner & DVB-T(Digital-TV). Do you feel this might be a better option as it also covers Digital?

Anything else I would need / should order for the above setup? Do you think it would be noisy or need coolers / additional fans?

    Thanks for your help!
