Obviously a lot depends on what companies do, but my personal opinion is to advise getting a capped rate asap.

Personally I am on one already, and with the last lot of rises I am now on a cheaper tariff, with a long way to go before my deal runs out.

The industry is getting expensive, and regardless of who's best etc, do something.

Surely there is a clause written into a capped gas price contract that if the wholesale cost of gas rises they can put your tariff up accordingly?

    Depends.

One company does have a clause surrounding "events beyond their control" which is their get out.

I know of another that will "take the hit" for any changes in circumstances and guarantee no price rises until the end of the term.
