I'm just about to buy a Sony digi box - the new version (760 I think). I was discussing the optical digital output with a guy in a HiFi shop and he said that only the earlier boxes have the output enabled as SKY asked sony to disable this output - something to do with wanting all Sky digiboxes to be the same.

    Can anybody clarify this?

If you have a sony box does the output work?

    Ta! :D

Le Hutch, Will this not work posted by DSKDAN previously?... Maybe it only works on the older boxes?

For you sony digibox owners who bought one, only to find the digital optical output doesn't work (like me)Try this software update:

    Remove card.
Unplug digibox and wait a few seconds.
Hold in the backup button on fascia, and plug back in. Keep holding in the back up button until you get an onscreen message saying it's updating software and could take upto 10 minutes.
Release the backup button and wait.
When the box switches off, put your card back in and switch it back on.
Your digibox should now be running the latest software :
O/s 1.2s3bu, EPG 2.7a.2*, Sony model no. changed to S750.37. and optical output enabled!!!

I followed the above instructions a few weeks ago and can confirm it works. I got my sony box in November last year.

What type of sound do you get out?

    Is it Dolby Digital?

No, you get the same as analogue. It may be possible to get DD if and when sky starts brodcasting DD but they will no doubt make it possible only through buying a new box.

You get the same sound as is carried via the analogue Scart output.

On my system, where I put the optical signal straight into a Yamaha DSP E800, the optical sound is massively better than that carried out via the scart. Better channel separation and much clearer treble and bass. The difference is so great my wife can hear it!

If I remember correctly, doesn't the German satellite system broadcast DD 5.1 with its movies (it might be the cable system). So that box just mentioned may be used for that. I wonder if the Sony box would work with it...Any German satellite users around who use Sony DSS decoders?
