I watched this with the resent death of Christopher Reeves as this was discussed in his documentary.
The program hung on the fact a doctor was using embryos that were 19 days old rather than 14.
From what I could gather 19 days was the time they could be used to clone different parts of a person’s body.

Well i don't have a problem with 14 to 19 days. I'm just a bit uneasy about the hole cloning issue. Having said that if i had a child that needed an new heart ect, then maybe i'd feel different about it.

You are allowed to abort a pregnancy much later.
Some people think cloning is growing a duplicate and cutting the part out you want and destroying the rest.

The program was a bit funny as there was a vote on the public voted,

The alternative ending is here http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/if/4065719.stm

Also the Watch the Newsnight discussion video is on the same page as well.

    Slight SPOILER

81% said they agreed with the doctor but there was a sting in the tale, yet on going to the web site for the other end there was an other sting with the opposite verdict.

I can't see much of a distinction between cloning in this context and taking organs from a dead person.

I want a clone. I'll download my brain into it when I hit 70! In fact I want 2 so they can each have half the year off.
I also want a clone of Britney Spears but thats for a whole different experiment

I don't really know enough about the subject to be honest. However what little I do know is that some research should take place but they should be some kind of guidelines and restrictions in place before commencing any further. I think the steps in genetic research/cloning should be taken slowly so that scientists can fully understand any and all consequences from doing this, not just for this generation but the generations that follow. At this time too little knowledge is known and a whole human should not be cloned for some decades at the very least. I believe only research into cloning specific organs and body parts should be done at this time. It's better it's done under guidelines rather than in secret facilities... Mind you I reckon it's already going on in various countries covertly.

14 to 19 days doesn't make much difference.

The real question for me is should we be doing it at all ? (So I haven't voted)

I'm guessing that it's not her neck he's interested in. Could be wrong though!

I've voted for the 19 days although I don't really know much about it.
