Recently I have started getting confirmation emails from hotels in Beijing. I thought nothing of it other than spam. Tonight I got another for the crowne plaza in Beijing. It looked official so I went to the site and low and behold I can login and see the booking. I can cancel it and reschedule, all the stuff you would expect from a hotel booking.

The weird part is the booking is under my name and my email address but no charges to my credit cards etc so I ask....what is going on? Should I be concerned?

They would normally charge you card on your departure wouldn't they.....sounds like your card has been cloned.

Why did they need to make the booking under the real email address? If credit card was cloned surely they can make a booking using a fake email address so OP wouldn't be notified?

Have you used/have an account with these hotels before? If you have, then probably your accounts with them have been hacked rather than card cloned (still worth cancelling your card though).

well had a look through all my credit cards and nothing unusual there. This happened before a few months back too and nothing appeared on my card.

I can login and change the dates, upgrade, cancel etc but there is no payment info so for example it doesn't tell me the last 4 digits of the card that made the booking.

I can't think of staying in a crowne plaza hotel but the group are owned by IHG which owns multiple hotels so maybe something there? Should I leave it, change the login password perhaps? Seems to strange for someone to use the same name and same email address but without seeing any payment information is there anything else I can do?

Does you email address contain your name?

Did the e-mail contain the log in details?

Did the e-mail contain the dates you were allegedly booked?

Makes me wonder if its a smart spam and everyone who gets the email is booked in already.

Why aren't you informing the hotel?

I take it you meant you logged into the official Crowne Plaza website, rather than clicked a link?
A lot of people seem to be getting ripped off by websites that look like legitimate ones just now.
Just tiny little changes in the address that make it differ from the real one and are easy missed when scanning.

I had a random car hire acknowledgement from Toronto a while back. It turned out it was a namesake of mine who missed his middle initial off his gmail address and used mine. Just emailed them to get it sorted.

This is what you get when EMail addresses aren't confirmed on registration :)

Shouldn't you be informing your credit card supplier's security dept just in case, or have you already done that?

    Yes phone calls needed.

Does the booking have a home address listed?

If it's a scam of any sort then any communication via the email will most likely be "tainted".

Go to their help page here: Customer Care | Crowne Plaza Hotels & Resorts

And check whether you really have a reservation. As suggested it could be someone of the same name and a very similar email address to yours, who mistyped the email when making a genuine booking.

Who is your email provider? My wife regularly receives emails for an American lady who appears to be using the same gmail address. I've contacted Google who say this isn't possible.

First thing I would do is check the exact URL of in the email against the URL found via Googling the hotel etc.

    What others mean, is this:

    [email protected]
    [email protected]

Michael could very well miss the a when registering with a website or booking something, but still enter a valid and in-use email address.

Had one last month for a hotel in Colorado. Binned it like all the other trash. Amusing thing was they even had the cheek to send a customer questionnaire a few days after asking to rate their service so I binned that aswell.

Yep, two people with the same name may have emails of:

    [email protected] and
    [email protected]

This has happened to me when I started getting mail for the second person because he or someone had left the 1 off when signing up for something.

Ok update time. I contacted the hotel and turns out someone with the same name and a very similar email address is what's to blame.

The hotel checked the last 4 digits of the card that made the booking and it wasn't mine. Also the phone number wasn't mine so looks like a genuine mistake

I will keep an eye on the credit card accounts but hopefully a genuine error. They have taken my email address off their system too. Thanks for all the advice guys. Much appreciated

Maybe it just needed the booking number to see the details? Or a password reset?
