Hi there , my current build has a phenom 965 and been looking at crossing to an LGA1155 and looking at the i5-3470 or i5-2400 to sit in a ASRock H77 Pro4.. i see both lga1155 sockets trump the am3 in whatever cinebench is, and passmark etc but what is the talk of less L2 cache and less L2 cache per core on the i5's ..the phenom has double... is that noticeable in real world terms?

I dont do video editing, however i unzip very large mkv files, general web viewing, pc gaming - but not to a massive extent but i think will increase, and im trying to (i think its called video encding or transcoding or something to send hd files across to my dlna enabled tv in the living room above. is the i5 capable of this??

The i5 is much better than the Phenom in every measurable way, i7 would be an even bigger jump in performance if you can afford it

Ok thanks, so what does the L2 cache lower on the i5 than the phenom mean to me? Will I see the difference?

cuz im all new to intel, im unsure of which ones to be looking at, some have 4 numbers like 3470, 2500k, others only have 3 like 980 .. . which am i to be looking at? Can a well priced/specced i7 be recommended for the cost of a 3470/3550? OC is not a necessity, but if its around cheap enough, il consider it

You can't compare those CPU's on tech specs, like clock speed or cache. They use totally different architectures, of which the i5 is much faster and efficient
