I am about to take the plunge into ordering Sky HD BUT ... been reading through the threads ... auto-power downs, excessive fan noise, jerky images, failed recordings.

If I get one I'll be connecting it to a Pioneer PDP-508XD via HDMI.

So my question is this - when ordering through Sky is there a particular model / version of a SKY HD box that I should insist on in order to eliminate (or minimise) these problems, or is it completely pot luck?

I just want to know that it will be reliable and quiet ! Is this possible?

    Thanks !

At the present time, there only is the one model of Sky HD box, so the only choice you have, I'm afraid, is take it or leave it.

    Cheers,

    Martin.

I've had mine since the first day they were issued, I've not had one problem. I suspect that that is the case for most people. After all, people will normally only post if they have a problem or need some sort of help.

My box is quiet and has worked perfectly aside from an odd HDMI handshake issue that cured itself within a few days. If you're nervous about the whole thing, it's best to get the box from Sky, they'll replace it if it does turn out to be noisy or misbehaves in some other way.

Yes, but there are different *versions* of that model, some with Western Digital hard drives and some with SeaGate. My version number ends with an "8" and I have a Seagate hard drive.

I believe version numbers ending "7" have Western Digital hard drives, which are supposedly quieter than version numbers ending "6" (unsure which hard drives these have)

Interesting ... so its the drive rather than the fan that makes the noise?

I wonder how I can find out for sure which is the quietest model?

Not sure if you can really. Im on my third box but its been fine for nearly a month now.

If you get a noisy box, send out for a replacement. Its what i did because i wasnt happy with the issues i was having and now its bob on! ;)

Upholder is right of course and for the people posting here with issues there are others not posting that have had a trouble free HD experience! ;)

I think it's just the luck of the draw,I've had my box over a year and it is quiet and I've had no significant problems.
Bear in mind most people who come on here have problems I suspect that there are more people without than with problems overall.
