the 360 isn't region free, only some of the games are. It's the same with the ps3, the console itself won't be region free, just the games will be.

All 360's are region locked to the country they are sold in so for US it is Region 1 and for the UK it is Region 2.

I bought COD2 game of the year version from ebay last week. NTSC version for £13.50. The DVD it came with was NTSC and played.

Just means the DVD is region 0, doesnt mean the 360 will play R1 DVDs.

Chuck, you've got it the wrong way round. The 360/PS3 machines are region free by default for games. It's the software publishers that put the region locks on their games.Hence some publishers don't bother so the games work on any console.

Thats not true. the 360 is region locked but its upto the game developers to include region coding on the games.

If the 360 was region free, all games would play region coded or not.

To get the DVD logo manufacturers must adhere to the DVD forum rules, i.e. lock the player to one single region (unless in Australia who have outlawed such practice).

Nothing says how hard or easy a manufacturer needs to make it to unlock, but the 360 is a worlds first trusted computing platform and it will NOT be easy to multiregion hack it.

I heard they ship without a DVD region lock and the region of the first DVD you play determines its locked region from that point onwards.

Thats how the DVD playback kit for the original xbox worked

iI personally think thats a stupid way of doing it anyway, imagine if somebody has a region 1 DVD and they want to see if it works, thats the first dvd they try and then none of the 200 Region 2 dvds he has work

Thats a load of rubbish mate!

All this region free craps doin me head in...If you "thought" the 360 was region free, that would mean you now know otherwise.

I'm sure there is info listed in the FAQ for this forum, and even if there isn't. A quick SEARCH would unearth loads of these threads.
