I think I need a router with a VPN?

Hi
I’m currently using an Apple TV and Getflix (smart dns) to get access to some Australian content. The smart dns is OK but a little hit and miss. I‘ve tried ExpressVPN on my iPad and it works great but I want to watch on my Apple TV on “the big telly”. I can’t load a VPN on the ATV so I’m considering buying a router to put ExpressVPN on.

i would like to have an app on my iPad to change settings on the VPN router, like changing the region to Australia and selecting the device to Apple TV etc.
Can anyone recommend a router and have any advice for me .

*Airplay doesn’t work from iPad+vpn to ATV

thanks Nat

AFAIK ExpressVPN is just an OpenVPN client. You could get a router that supports custom firmware such as Merlin on Asus routers that includes OpenVPN. I have used Merlin but did not use/need VPN. Take a look here for more info: About | Asuswrt-Merlin

Netflix has started to recognize VPN usage on their Network. The last time I tried to use an Australian IP Address via ExpressVPN, Netflix blocked the content I wanted to watch.

It’s for Optus Sport (premier league 😀) but I might get the same issue...
ive been using a smart dns service for over a year and it works but its a bit slow to load up - quality is fine when it connect. I’m hoping a vpn will be an upgrade.

I bought two routers to load the ExpressVPN firmware, first one won’t take the firmware because I got the DSL version of the router and I’m guessing the second one wont work for the same reason. So I’ve bought one from Guardian Routers with the ExpressVPN firmware preinstalled. I knew I’d get it wrong 😂

Got the router today with the ExpressVPN app loaded and it’s excellent!
Split tunnelling is great, choose which individual device on your network that you want to a use the VPN. Works great for the Apple TV.
From my iPad I can select Melbourne as my location choose Apple TV to use “router VPN“ and Optus Sport runs great. 😃
