When Harmonix left the GH series to make Rock Band, i was worried Activision wouldnt be able to step up to the plate and make games as good as the previous two, i was happy with how "Legends Of Rock" turned out give or take the boss battles and a few poor covers.

But apparently there are 4, count em FOUR! new GH games in production!

Now i thought in order to withstand the onslaught of Rock Band Activision would have to look at this game as a platform, more songs in the form of DLC, not discs!

At this point once Rock Band hits, with the way they are handling DLC and the amount of it, plus the drums and 4 player coop, i cant see me buying anymore GH games.

I really love the GH franchise its a shame Activision seem determined to run it into the ground.

There is no doubt in my mind that RB will wipe the floor with GH but i wouldnt rule out buying another GH game in the future. I think that they would need to change direction or offer that little something extra but a cheapie solus purchase from Play Asia would only set me back £25.

I understand where you're coming from Guns but as a "pure" guitar player I would think Rock Band is not going to offer anything like the challenge GHII has. I think the difficulty of GHIII is obscene at times but its nice they've pushed the bar higher so it didn't become stale.

I guess time will tell but in my eyes although its nice to vary the music taste it would be cool to have a much heavier version of GH without all the ballads for some fans. I'll see you in the GH4 thread when its released Guns ;)

I have only just started down the road of GH, when I got a second hand copy of GH2 the other day. Have to say I absoultely love it, but have no doubt that I will never be able to nail songs 100% on anything other than easy!

This means I am not sure I will buy any more either.

Have to say I am disapointed in the price of the DLC too. I know there are some licence costs, but seems to me most of the songs are covers anyway.....

Interested in RockBand, but will wait to see what it is like.

Having got every version of GH on all formats, its definitely one of my favourite franchises. Rock Band will take away most of the non-hardcore muso's/guitarists from the franchise, but I liked what Activision did with 'Rock the 80s'. They took GH almost down the SingStar route, which is where this franchise could go - lots of specialist disks at a nice cheap price. £25 for 40 songs and if each disk was themed - 80's hair metal (he he, that would be for me.....:D), 90's indie, 70's classic rock, 00's alternative......

I would definitely carry on picking these kinds of disks up, as well as rock band. The one thing I dont like about the downloads at the moment is the lack of achievements - this isn't because I'm some kind of gamerpoint whore (well, maybe......), but I think the achievements certainly keep me playing. So I'd be all up for new disks, a la SingStar, rather than targeted download packs (although making them band orientated helps).

Then again, I luuuuuuuuuuuuurve my GH

I agree with Coz, if GH3 had been a DLC add-on for GH2 I wouldn't have been so keen. I like the achievements, even of they are harder than coffin nails in 3.

I don't mind new versions with new songs (themed disks would be great) as long as Solus versions are available.

GH has been a huge success. One the one hand, it great, because it allowed it to escape from the PS2 onto other formats (I was going to buy a PS2 just for GHI). Unfortunately, that's also why it'll have every last penny wrung from it by Activision until they kill it dead through their greed (Tony Hawk anyone?) and move onto something else.

I agree Guns. Rock Band will offer so much more that for me it makes Guitar Hero franchise a thing of the past.

Roll on Rock Band!!

Wasn't that impressed with GH3 anyways. Difficulty got very skewed near the end to the point of utter frustation.

I agree with a lot of the views expressed already. If Activision start to totally go Cash Cow on GH then I'll drop it quick. GH3 is as Chris said verging on utter frustraton in terms of its difficulty.. I can see myself going to Rock Band and never looking back if the rumors of the multiple GH games are true.

I bought GH3 before Christmas and it was my first ever GH game. Loved easy level, Medium was challenging but Geeezzzz I didn't stand a chance on Hard level. I just couldn't manage that 5th orange button. Anyhow i gave up and have just sold it on ebay for £59 which is a nice return

You'd have got the hang of it with practise, I'm sure. How long did you try it for?

Medium blew my mind the first time I tried it, nowadays it's just tedious to play. When you 'unlock' your own ability to play on Hard the game really comes alive because you'll still be learning for a much longer period of time than you would on Medium.

True i have always said i would be interested in a Metal GH, thats why i like III alot, many dont but for my taste in music theres some good stuff in there.

If they did that at a reasonable price then maybe i would be tempted, however i still believe they should be conentrating on DLC and building up a big library of songs to choose from so you can effectively make your setlist to your taste.

If the future of GH: is GH: Aerosmith edition, then im out

GH3 was my firs experience of this type of game, with a dedicated controller. Out of hand i'd dismissed the earlier games as I assumed they were built around a cheesy gimick.

That of course all changed the moment I played the xbox demo which had me laughing at myself and how bad I was for a good 20 minutes of gameplay. It was immediately clear though that this was going to be a new fun experience over playing FPS and other genres, so I decided I had to get it. Then playing with the actual guitar controller was a whole new experience.

I have to admit I'm actually rather impressed with all the songs on GH3 (apart from the last set) as i'm not a fan of rock music and initially only recognised a few bands. Indeed I have never purchased a single or album of any of the artists featured (well exception being Beastie Boys, but that was a different era). Yet once I started playing it I realized I did know most of the tracks and the last boss battle featured one of my childhood favorites.

On the basis of how god GH3 was I got GH2, but have so far been disappointed with the song selection. I am playing through on easy first jus to unlock everything though, so in terms of challenge and enjoyment I'm sure GH2 will be close to GH3 once I move up to medium/hard.

However I realize that in terms of songs GH appears to be caught in a niche, the current DLC doesn't appeal enough to me and so to continue playing or buying into the franchise means they have to broaden its range. The perfect solution is DLC as I'm sure hardcore fans would be highly vocal if they released a GH for a different genre. Alas activision are proving to be highly dissappointing in this area with the lacklusture approach releasing a minimal number of songs.

Although Rockband doesn't have a huge leap on GH in terms of songs I would like, their commitment to frequent DLC suggests they will be in a far better position over time to release more songs that I know, like and want to play, even though i have little interest in playing drums or singing. SO for that reason I'm going to be monitoring it and in all likelyhood get it once released. If they then maintain their DLC releases and broaden the range over GH then I can't see myself going back.

I'm staggered that Activision/Red Octane are being so poor in terms of DLC. I mean The Sims cashed in on a massive franchise often to the moans of hardcore gamers, but here is a game (GH) that absolutely would work with the same model, although updated to DLC instead of numerous expansion discs. Disc expansions would work too, but the model for that is to release one every few months maybe longer and so I can never see it broaden its appeal in terms of genres. I for one wouldn't want to have to wait 6 months to get say a 'blues' collection of something, when they could just as easily provide 5-10 tracks as DLC in a matter of weeks.

Its also the perfect game for increasing its content as I can't believe it would take more than a few days at most to convert any song over to its format, generating note lists etc. Obviously licensing is an issue, but honestly when i was involved in the music industry most companies would jump at the chance of broaden a bands/song reach and means of generating money (licensing).

So in short i just hope one camp or the other broadens their range of songs, as thats the only thing that will really convince me to continue to buy into this genre. Oh and at the right price too ;)

I was trying to do the hard level for about a week and was continuously booed off lol. Plus I was getting tired of the stick I was getting from my friends for playing with a dance mat for blokes! (Most of my mates are non gamers) :suicide:

LOL

That is why I was never interested in the GH games as I always thought of them as a dance mat game, however, I have been on the look out for a second hand bargin since playing GHII at my friends house just before xmas :)

Good points in your post, but I think you would be suprised at how long it takes to make things work properly.

I seriously doubt it only takes a few days to create any sond for GH. If it did - you would have seen more DLC for sure.

The only problem with rock band will be the price. Going from the US price, I can see it being £100 over here. Too much for a game in my eyes.

Thats not the only problem unfortunately - much of the hardware is reportedly failing after moderate usage.

4 gh's does make sense it will just all have the same idea with revamped gameplay grapics etc. except GH4 will be the mix of rock songs and the 3 others will all include the same guitar and play the same except will be dedicated the one artist if these come out as solus just think of them as add-ons

My GH3 guitar is getting kinda loose after one month's play. No problems yet, but it can't be good.
Getting a new guitar with GH3 made me realise how thrashed my GH2 axe was.

But it's a game, a guitar, a microphone and a drumkit!

Agreed - If its £100 for all that I will be well happy. My fear is they will try and milk the UK market cash cow as they always do, and hence it will end up nearer £150. I'd probably still buy it anyhow, I would just be less happy!

Id agree with that!

Its still £100 for a game though.
If you can buy the game on its own, then I'll pick it up (as you can use the XBL headset as a Mic, and the GH3 guitar) and I'm not fussed on the the drums (don't have room for them anyway).

I think I paid £120 for Steel Battalion for the xbox and that only came with one big ass joypad, for a guitar, mic and drum kit and I would be willing to go £150-£200
