In all honesty, it's pure numbers being played with to demonstrate the other has the upper hand. I would say the PS3 may be a bit more powerful, but not night and day difference, unlike the Xbox and PS2, where there is a big difference.
Sony HAS to talk up their console as it's coming later and are more concerned this time round with what Microsoft do.
As for Nintendo - they've pretty much aligned themselves with the kids (under 8's) as far as consoles go. I know they have RE and a few other good titles, but as wirt Sega, they keep everything in-house, which ultimately hurts them rather than benefiting them. Sony had the right idea from the start, and that shows with their position in the market, from nowhere to everywhere in a very short space of time.

Ultimately, by Xmas 2006, most serious gamers will likely have both PS3 and Xbox 360, when the prices have plummeted, since there'll be titles exclusive to each that they want to have and play.
So, it's going to be pretty much just like it is now, only in Hi-Def!

Don't get too hung up on the specs - just wait and see if you like what your eyes tell you when they arrive.

Too right! Sony have a dubious track record in hyping up their machines' abilities. Seeing actual games in action is the only real way to compare.

My personal gut feeling is that the new generation of consoles will be the same as the current generation in terms of relative power, ie. XBox360 will have the best looking graphics closely followed by Revolution (I think Nintendo have a few surprises waiting) followed by PS3.

This is basically because history seems to be repeating itself.

    1. Sony produce lots of graphs, numbers etc. but no realtime games footage.
    2. Microsoft give specs but don't go on about them, just letting the games speak for themselves.
    3. Nintendo underplay their specs whilst quietly getting on with it.

Whatever happens, gamers are in for a few treats over the next 18 months. All 3 machines will be worth buying for one reason or another IMHO.

    RDB :)

I'd be interested in knowing where you read this, as it just goes to prove Sony's PR trick has done the job with some press monkey. It is way too simplistic to say PS3 is twice as powerful as the 360 - complex technology just doesn't work like that. It's about the whole package, and there are ways in which the 360 can produce more 'powerful' stats than the PS3. To me, an integrated online service like MS's Live is way more important than how many floating point operations a machine can push out. A machine is only ever as good as it's weakest component.

By Xmas 2006, the 360 will be celebrating a year since launch and probably looking at it's first price drop, whereas the PS3 will have only just been released in Europe. If Sony want people to pay way more for their machine at this time, it'll have to look like something special, and that's why they push out meaningless stats like 'we're twice as powerful'. Only us technology addicts will have both by then, as it takes some serious cash investment to buy early (they love us 'early adopters' though!).

There is no point commenting on the revolution yet, as no official specs or dates have been released yet (though I believe there is a big announcement next month).

Where did that come from? :rotfl:

Anyway I've always wondered that if the PS3 probably is more powerful (it probably is) and blu-ray has 5 times the storage, why are cross-platform pretty much identical on both systems??

Even PS3 exclusives aren't millions of years ahead?
