Damn, that's the trouble with the WWW, a bewildering array of choice, opinion and circumspect.
Anyway, after spending all day looking around about how to improve my un-holy din, I've ended up here...

My current set-up is extremely modest. A 2000 Linn Classik model and a pair of Monitor Sound GS-10's, and a Macbook Pro.

I want to upgrade severely into DS, more specifically a Majic or a Akurate DS, VERY interested in the KIKKIN Pre-Amp.

Been trawling through the reviews of this little box and they are favourable indeed.

Now, here's the issue, most of my hard earned cash will go on the source, so will my old Classik cut it with a set-up like Majic/Akurtate DS with Kikkin pre-amp, or is there no point whatsoever, and I'll have to buy a suitable Amp?

Also, I plan to use my Laptop as the Library, is this a good idea?
If not, the simplest, and hopefully cheap option would be appreciated.

A few questions there, any opinion would be welcome :)

Nope. The drives in laptops aren't really designed for 24*7 spinning. You should look at a NAS device with dual drive RAID1 mirroring so you can survive a disk failure. (and also do backups of course :D)

Your Linn dealer could supply a NAS along with the streamer.

    Thanks for your reply!

Hmmmm, I have a MacBook Pro and I have placed all my music onto iTunes.
Any ideas about how to get round this or will I just have to burn again?

Also, will the Classik Music work ok as a pre and power Amp with the Majic DS until I get the money for a suitable pre and power Amp?

What format did you use to rip your CD? If you used lossy compression, then IMHO a Linn DS is rather pointless, you may as well go for a £75 Apple Airport Express, or rip again to FLAC lossless compression.

I you used Apple lossless, then I'd suggest converting to FLAC and copying to a NAS device. All the streamers from Linn and Squeezebox are happiest when streaming FLAC format files.

I use a Netgear ReadyNAS Duo, with embedded iTunes Server. My music is ripped via iTunes into AIFF (Apple Lossless). My Squeezebox handles such files flawlessly.

Thanks very much for your advice.
I'm going to go for a Majic, save and build from there.
I'll let you know how it goes

    Thanks again!
