I have been happily living with an old REL Stadium subwoofer for about 5 years and wanted to upgrade to a subwoofer that offered two inputs (one for my high-end music system, and one for my AV system). The new Stadium 5 is a year away and wondered if any of you would recommend a high quality sub that is great with music and movies. Tight musical bass with planty of depth and slam is what I want but I need MUSICAL. Thanks guys!

MJ Acoustics REf1 MK2 is the way to go dual inputs and dual crossovers so can be independantly set up for both 5.1 and stereo, 2 subs one box! Bonus

Would this prove much of a benefit over the Ref 1 ?

Only if you need dual cross overs, eg listen to a lot of music but need more bass (small stereo speakers etc) or you are losing out on ow effects in movies due to using high level inputs on the current sub, not enough to warrant changing sub (from mark 1) unless you meet these specific criteria.

Take a look at B&W range of subs.

The ASW750 £1200 is a good performer and very musical. Its better for music than AV IMO but since its fantastic with music thats not a bad point.

Then there is the ASW800 £1600 and the top of the range ASW850 £2000. Both of which I have never heard but seem to get rave reviews.

A big drawback for many people with the B&W ASW750 is that it will only accept low level inputs so will be of no use to anyone wishing to connect at speaker level.

As an ASW750 owner I can give it a big thumbs up myself.
It is indeed exremely good with music. Bass instruments such as a fretless bass guitar sound more natural than any other sub I have heard before.

I have a Kef AV1 which ive had for 4 years which is superb for Bass and AV. It cost 2500 new. I used to have a REL storm, stadium and Stentor and can easily say the more you spend the better the bass. I would recommend you go for the latest Stentor model you can afford as its substancial step up from the Stadium you currently have. I will be doing this at some point in the near future. Failing that, you may be able to pick up a second hand Studio, but i would imagine these are rare,as why would anyone wish to part with it !!

    Thanks Colin.

How much is the current Stentor? Does it have two inputs (one for music, one for AV)?

    Cheers.

current stentor new is about £2500. You would probably get a 2nd hand one for less but make sure its one of the later models that incorporates the connections you need ! - I think the most recent is the stentor 4, althought you may find 2 & 3 have the connections and are about the sort of money you wish to spend. Which ever model you go for , it will be superior and offer you more of the sound that you like than your current one. Check out REL website for further specifications etc.
    Good Luck.

I’ve been so, so happy with my STADIUM, that I think I might just stay with REL and save for the STENTOR. It’s worth extending my budget to £2500 you think?

I would, you will not be disappointed and you should never need to upgrade again as it really is that good !

I think your better off buying brand new if you can afford it and to be honest I would be surprised if there are any/ many 2nd hand of the latest models available. Also, unless your AV room is ridiculously large, it will sound better and better the more you upgrade the components, due to its transparency. Go for it, you know it makes sense. Check the specifications first though so it offers you the flexibility you are looking for.Let me know how you get on.
