What is it ?!

I didn't know what it was either. Just googled it and it's the laser unit inside the PS3. Still wouldn't know where you'd get one though :(

diveneo sell them, and it works out as around £50-£51 for it before shipping.
Divineo.com - Product Information

you can get them elsewhere, but at prices up to about £90.

wouldnt it be cheaper(or better for quality reasons) to get sony to source one and repair it?

Looking further into the fail rate of these parts (70%) I think I might aswell go with sony...£99.

Not really, it's an extended warranty scheme promoted by Sony. You could sign up for 1 month, get your PS3 fixed/replaced then cancel your policy. It's all legitimate and much cheaper than paying sony for a repair.
