    Hi

I'm going to be ceiling mounting my Z2 and will need a 9m mains lead and I want something half decent that won't pick up any RFI. I only want to specd about £100, so has anyone got any ideas? I would consider making my own, but I don't know anything about that sort of thing!

    Cheers for any help.

    Kane

Or just make one! simplest answer, buy the most expensive ultimately sheilded cable you can and cross all other wires at 90deg.

    Hello Kane,

    I use CY control cable
    http://www.centralcables.co.uk/products/cy.htm

Available at most electrical wholesalers, you will not find it at B&Q etc. 1.5MM 3 core will do.

Nice and cheap, and is just what you are looking for.

If you cannot find any, send me email, I have a reel.

    Mark.

    Thanks Mark

So if I just stick a MK plug on one end and an IEC on the other, this will do the trick and work well? Is it worth adding a Wattgate 320, or will this not really add to the performance of this basic cable? Will this cable be adequate at keeping noize out of my Z2?

What is the average price for 9m of this cable, as my local hardware place can be a bit overpriced?

If I run this or any other cable alongside a DVI cable in a conduit, will there be any interference problems?

    Hello Kane,

I would guess at less than £2 per metre for cut lengths.

Will be fine for the projector, you could use a DIY braided cable of some kind, but you need a screened cable, so it is OK near the signal cables.

I would always put mains in a seperate conduit, try to keep it away from DVI etc, even screened mains cable.

Maybe use a metal conduit or 22mm copper pipe in the wall, as darren7 suggested.

    Mark,

Could I use two lengths of CY woven together? Would this weave help reduce the chances of it picking up RF? I assume the two lengths twisted together would make a very stiff cable?

In the Merlino DIY cable (above link), they suggest that the shield be connected to the earth wire at the plug end to produce a semi-balanced connection. To do this, would I simply splice and twist the shield so that it will fit into the earth in the plug along with the earth wire?

Sorry I am so un-knowledgeable about electrics!

    Thanks

I've got about 30m spare of the 1.5mm 3-core shielded CY control mains cable that Mark referred to. I'm using it to power my Sony VW12 projector. If you're interested, I could sell some (or all) of it to you for £1 a metre + p&p at cost.

    There you go Kane :)

    Godfather to the rescue.

    Bargain at £1 per metre.

Follow the guide on TNT to terminate if you are not sure.
At the MK 13 amp plug end, the braid goes into the earth pin with the earth wire.( make the braid into a thin wire, might have to snip away some of the braid) .
At the IEC connector ( projector) end of the cable, the briad is not connected, just the earth wire and L+N

A multiple wire braid will be difficult to terminate, so a single run will be just fine for a projector install.

    Good luck,

    Mark.

    Godfather,

I tried to send you a PM, but your inbox is full!

I'd like to take 10m from you if that's OK? I'm not sure how much P&P will be, what do you think £2.50ish?

If you PM me your address etc, I can send you a cheque. I'd like to try to get the cable before Xmas if poissible?

I notice you live in central London, I don't suppose you work in the West End do you, as I'll be around tomorrow (Tues 16th)?

    Let me know ASAP.

    Thanks a lot!
