I have outgrown my subs...

I thought my Strata III and Quake would do me for the time being.. but I watched 'Antz' this evening and was staggered that my subs were being overdriven at -15db! This is not normally the case in most films - must be more upper sub bass than usual. Makes me wonder though, if i were to change to a Servo 15 or SVS 20-39, how much further would the 400 or so watts go compared to the Strata's 100w? I remember reading a thread here on power v. SPL - to get another 3db SPL you have to double the power or something. So I'm 15db off reference for a start and then I want to overcome the REL's shortcomings in the power department.. am I looking at an ASW750? 1KW sounds about right to me.. but ...

thoughts anyone?

(So much for not upgrading for a while...)

It's not all about watts. The volume of the sub place a big part along with several other factors. One of the reasons the SVSs are capable of such high output is their size.

If you want to know what SVS would be suitable just email them with your room dimension and typical listening material/levels.

Unless you had a very large room a 20-39 PC Plus would be more than enough as mine has no trouble at reference levels.

I upgraded from a Storm and the difference was pronounced.

out of interest, what size is your room?

Yesterday I was watching Titan A.E. for the first time, and had my system at -14dB. There were many moments where I think the LFE reached the limits of my Yamaha SW800. My neighbours (and theirs probably ;)) would think this limit is loud enough though! :D

This in no way means I'm not considering to buy a reasonable size SVS somewhere soon..

My room is 12' by 13' and i have a 20-39pc+ in here next to the TV.
Although i am now thinking that it is a bit of an overkill and maybe getting rid of it and getting something smaller.
I just dont seem to be getting the best out of it.
It does work good, but the nieghbours seem to get more out of it than me.
Yesterday i had Finding nemo on, running at -12db and it sounded good, but then next door came knocking, complaining that i just shock two pictures of the top of their TV.
Normally they are moaning about their doors rattleing.
It does not shake or rattle anything in my house......so maybe i am losing all the force of it into the walls.
Now thinking i might be better off with a 675 or SPL1000.

If your room is bigger than mine thow, you might be alright.

It's 18 * 12 and I would guess that you would see a huge improvement in bass (depth, power and quality) by replacing your Strata and Quake by a single 20-29 PC Plus.

Try and find a friendly forum member in your area that will let you have a listen to theirs.

You may have have your SVS sitting in a null point relative to your listening position. Try moving it about and see what happens.

In particular try it behind you if that gets it furthest away from your neighbour's wall. There is no locational information to speak of with a decent sub. So you won't know it's behind you. Concentrate the SPLs where you can enjoy them rather than bothering your neighbours.

My guess is that a lesser sub might lift the peak bass spectrum into the clearly audible area and irritate your neighbours even more. I'd try a home demo of any alternative sub to save wasting your money.

Chris - if you want to hear an ASW750 in action your more than welcome to come to mine. I am just off the M25 - about 2 junctions from the junction where the M4 meets the M25.

its almost a no brainer actually. an ASW750 is roughly twice the price of a 20-39PC+. my RELs are struggling in my room. anything I do is gonna be positive, and if its not, I can always sell on the SVS.

Yup that it is but you can get a discount on the B&W to reduce the differential.

Given the performance of the PB2+ I heard and the good write ups the PC range has received on these forums, I think it will offer a significant step up in performance from your REL.

Hi Chris
My room size is 16'x14, and the svs 20-39pc+ easily gives rock solid bass at any level,Ive not yet been able to make the sub struggle even when ive turned the volume up to insane levels so i would say order the svs you wont be dissapointed.
Cheers Gonzo.
