I have just received a bonus £250 for 2018 from a long term contract of mine.

I have the huge hump over it as the club members slated me all summer over the condition of the sports surface and made it quite clear what they thought of me, this is typical to any greenskeeper or groundsman working in sports its part of the job.

So I feel I need to return it as I can not except it after what has been said about me and what has been said, so I was thinking of returning it with a thank you but I can not except it and just being polite, my new lady said I am being silly and just take it and put it towards the house repairs as I'm skint.

Yes it will pay for the entrance hall flooring and be of a huge benefit to me but excepting it is so so wrong to me I am a proud man and I have stood on my own two feet since I was sixteen. I have found it quite insulting. I would have much preferred a nice letter saying thank you for your efforts of 2018 in a very difficult year.

So do I return it and say thank you but I can not except, take the money but its not right ,or say thank you I will donate it to a charity, I do not want to upset the customer as I need the work and have been with the club for nearly 2 decades.

Would you take it or return it ? ( I need the cash but to proud and stubborn to except it )

If you return how is best ?

Take it. Don’t be so silly (proud).

You would be cutting off your nose. And your mrs will probably never let you forget it:p

    Agreed.
Not wishing to be harsh but it sounds like you know that it is likely to happen.
No job is perfect so take your time to think about what you want in life.

Keep it. Being involved in sports clubs is a thankless task - paid or volunteer. I was a volunteer for 7 years and everyone always used to moan about this and that. My response was always "if you could do a better job then step up and do it". Invariably, they never did.

As above if they have paid it they must think you deserve it, so take it and do your flooring

My new mrs is new 6 months the last one was 25 years.

After separating things have been very tight as the house I purchased is like the film The Money Pit :rotfl:

Yes I'm proud and proud of it, if I deserved a bonus I would happily except it, but members giving you a slating and then excepting a bonus is just wrong.

    Totally agree with DroidSkin.
    Definitely take it.
They obviously think you deserve it to have given you it in the first place.
As for people not being totally happy with you, then that is life, take it on the chin and learn from it. As Winston Churchill said (or was it Bob Marley?) "you can please some people sometimes, but you cant please all the people all the time".
Failing that, you could send it to me. I don't deserve it either, but will gladly take it off your hands and wont feel guilty in the slightest.

Do the members pay the bonus or does the committee? The committee have obviously felt you had done a good job. Members will always moan. They'll moan about the price of beer, the time of the kick off, tee off etc, they'll moan about what time it closed, the colour of the curtains etc. Ignore them. However, if you don't feel you did the best job you could then definitely return if you feel the need, but don't do it because you were slagged off by moaning minnies.

Think of it as an apology for them moaning too much and treat the new GF to a crazy night out, courtesy of the nobbers at work.

If it's 'their' money you're spending and not your own, being charming and romantic is so much easier. :D

If you return it, you will give the impression that the naysayers are right. If you believe you have done a good job (and I'm not judging at all here), then accept it and feel it was deserved.

Basically, have the courage of your convictions. It's not a lot of money in the great scheme of things and it won't make any difference one way or another. You'll still get the haters having a go either way.

I have been in this job for nearly 30 years so a fair time yes you get a bit thick skinned to some comments and other times you just fire back a bit unprofessional at times but it keeps me sane.

As for life I'm skint , I have a new home in a nice place but needs a lot of work and money, money that I don't have but taking this is so wrong. I would rather donate it that bank it.

You manage to a good enough job to earn a bonus despite dealing with customers who are living proof that evolution doesn't always work.
How about taking a couple of weeks to decide and if you need to vent, we are here for you.

Last year was a tough year in sports turf , due to the heat and lack of rain I have never known a year like it it.

Do I need the money much more than most realize but I would rather donate it than except it, yes its a bit stupid and shoot your self in the foot . but its plain wrong to take it.

At the moment its a lot of money for me.

The job is a thank less task and most people in my trade will agree with, social media sites is just venting anger at what you do for a living.

If I posted comments up about some of the playing members who have not got a clue I would be up in front of the Blazier brigade.

Are you sure your not one of my members.:)

they don't think of long term problems just the ones they played on that day, the guy who one never complained but the one that lost is all down to the turf manager, and its his fault he lost.

Thank you for the response so far but I'm still 99% on returning it.

I don't know why you feel so bad taking it when the committee feel you have deserved it so have paid it to you, I get a company bonus annually of around £2.5k and just say someone has been off six months sick that year, they still get the full bonus, I don't see them trying to return half of it, instead they are looking to book their next holiday, spend it and enjoy it, sounds like you need it
